The Statism Of The Union

It's All About Grabbing Power... From You I got your state of the Union, right here.

This evening, President Obama is scheduled to deliver the annual "State of the Union" address to Congress, and to the world. Formerly a simple report from the nation's chief executive to the people's representatives (often delivered in written form only), the State of the Union has become a spectacle. For as long as any of us can remember, the speech has been a simple cheerleading event, a pep rally for the president during which congressional members from his own party stand and applaud every other line while the members from the other party sit in silence.

If you have the patience to sit through the speech's telecast, you'll hear the president say a few things over-and-over for the applause of his liberal colleagues in the Democratic Party (and their smaller numbers this year will be disguised by an ingenious plan to "show bipartisanship" by seating Democrats and Republicans together on both sides of the aisle, breaking with tradition and "redistributing applause" throughout the floor). His key themes are sure to be about "jobs," "competitiveness," and "investment."

The thing is, between all the applause lines, you're going to need a translation of what the president really means when he uses these terms. President Obama, along with his left-wing colleagues, call themselves "progressives," and they are speaking a different language from the one our founders used (and that you might use). They are really "statists," as conservative author Mark Levin has famously pointed out (my dictionary defines "statism" as "the doctrine or practice of vesting economic control, economic planning, etc., in a centralized state government" - kinda like the philosophy they've tried in places like the old Soviet Union). And one of the favorite statist techniques is to use terms with which you might be familiar, but to subtly change the meaning of those terms with the help of their sycophants in the media and entertainment industries. This makes the uninformed more susceptible to agreeing with (and voting for) the statists; it gets you to give them your own power of self-governance, and to do so freely.

Here's the real state of the Union's economy: when statists like the president talk about "jobs," they really mean "entitlements." While the free market would naturally create jobs like a machine, the statist economy seeks to eliminate all wealth incentives, deprive people of real jobs, and make them dependent upon government largesse in the form of unemployment, Social Security, and government "jobs."

When he says "competitiveness," he doesn't mean making the U.S. workforce more competitive in the global marketplace... far from it! The statists feel the U.S. has been far too competitive for far too long. They seek to make America more collaborative with other statist economies (such as China). No, "competitiveness" in the statist context refers to the degree to which statism itself can battle more effectively the founders' notions of free markets and citizen self-rule. In short, he wants to make his party more competitive with his Republican "enemies" (his label from a few weeks ago) by promising voters a nice chunk of other people's money.

And it should be understood that, when the president talks about "investment," he's referring to government spending fueled by skyrocketing taxes and national debt. The statists' "investments" in stimulus, bailouts, and entitlements have impressed themselves on the public's notice; but, by-and-large, the public ain't impressed. So the president's teleprompter preparers needed a new word for "spending" - a word you won't hear much in this evening's speech. The new word is "investment." Whenever you hear that word, hang on to your wallet!

The state of America is dreary; the country's in a downward spiral toward statism. We live in a nation where all influential institutions, regardless of how they're chartered, are "owned" by the statists... from the Democrat echo-chamber that our media have become to the boot camps for "progressives" that are our colleges and universities. Wealth, so vital to real investment in our future but so easy to demonize everywhere from the "news" to the movie theater, is a sin. The business of America is no longer business, but redistribution of our wealth (including to millions of citizens of other nations). The grey hand of statist "administration" seeks to fall over everything that makes America exceptional and great, putting firmly in its own grasp every decision from which light bulb you can buy to what kind of health care (or surgery) you can have. No, you didn't vote for any of that, nor even elect anyone who did... the statist doesn't need anyone's vote. All it takes is a glance at the number of "czars," who execute the de facto governance of the nation not through law but through regulation, to understand this.

And if you object to any of it, or disagree with the statists in any public way, you'll be demonized as a purveyor of "hostile rhetoric," and accused of inciting unrest (at least), or even outright violence (more likely!). So don't send a link to this article to too many people.

You have to keep objecting, though. Violence, of course, is NOT the answer. The statist only hopes you'll lash out in violent ways, to justify the inevitable authoritarian response which could truly entrench their control of the masses. No, the answer is non-violent non-cooperation, as Mahatma Gandhi advocated. It means personal responsibility. You control your own behavior - make it an example of integrity. You control your own work - make it productive and wealth-creating as an example of perseverance. You control your own vote, at least for now. Make it count.

In short, do what inspirational leaders do. Before long, you'll be one.

Only by resisting the statism of the American left can we dramatically improve the real state of our great blessed Union.

Of course the Union system in the States is almost as bad...
