Self-Reliant Entrepreneurs Are "Lucky" Every Day It's 7-11-11 today, and those are some lucky numbers. But before you go out and buy that lottery ticket, take a few minutes to remember all the things that should make you feel like every day is your lucky day.
First, you're lucky to be alive, and to be healthy enough to read things like this on the internet. That's a big blessing; in fact, I'd say it's the First Blessing on any list you can make of the things that make you feel lucky.
Second, you're lucky to be an American. (If you are not an American, you think 7-11-11 doesn't arrive until November, so you probably tuned out two paragraphs ago.) Can you believe the Founding Fathers had the courage and foresight to create such an unbelievably prosperous nation, and that their crazy experiment has thrived for 235 years? Talk about luck. Despite what you hear from merchants of class envy, only in free America do the rich get richer while the poor get... richer.
You are lucky to have the people you have in your life. Family and friends - the people you love, and who love you - make life worth living. But consider this: you're also lucky to have the competitors and adversaries you have. Being forced to compete makes you stronger, and if you have one, it makes your business stronger. People who oppose you, even those who represent a rival approach to life in every way, help you strengthen your own values and define for yourself who you are. And don't forget that your adversaries are, most likely, not really enemies. They're not terrorists. They oppose you, they struggle against you in some aspects of life, but they aren't trying to kill you.
If you have a significant other, how lucky are you? Make sure to tell him/her that today's date reminded you of how lucky you are to have him/her.
I know many people who want to be inspirational leaders. I tell them that the road to inspirational leadership starts with appreciation... and, if you ask them, most inspirational leaders will tell you they've been lucky.
But is it really luck? There are two types of person out there - those who lean toward their inner Entrepreneur, and those who've been taken over by their inner Victim. The former (whether or not they own a business) work hard, take risks, bet on themselves, and make contributions to the world. The latter (even if they own a business) blame others, expect the worst, play it safe, and need to be taken care of.
Guess which type tend to become inspirational leaders?
Go ahead and buy the lottery ticket. Who knows what could happen? But remember the age-old expression: "The harder I work, the luckier I get."
