Vacation Can Be Good For Your Business

Get Your Daily NEWSS, But Make Sure To Recharge, Too How's your personal vitality as we enter autumn in the northern hemisphere? How's your energy? Are you performing well, doing your best, bringing what you need to bring to your daily work?

No matter what you do, if you're like my clients, you have to bring your "A game" to your work every day. If you own your own business, your performance (and, therefore, your vitality and level of energy) are key to the company's success. Some entrepreneurs claim they don't have the time (or, ironically, the energy) to undertake a "health kick;" however, staying fit is good for business.

There's a local business I patronize from time to time, but when I dropped by the other day I was reminded why I tend to take my business elsewhere when I can. The staff at this business, from the owner to the customer-service folks, have NO energy. They can't be bothered with the basic niceties and upbeat courtesy common to most successful small businesses... and this is true over the telephone as well as in person.

Here, in my mind, is the kicker: the lack of energy seems to be infecting these folks with an attitude that can't be good for their business. It's true that I am almost always the only patron of this shop when I do drop by... so it would be hard to believe that a little pep couldn't help their bottom line, at least a little bit. I think the low traffic might be due to the attitude the staff always seem to exude. A prime example is that, no matter what question you ask as a customer, their answer is almost always framed in terms of what they can't do for you, and why they can't do it.

Don't be that business! Start by getting your daily dose of the key health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition (just eat right... you know how), Exercise (3-6 good workouts a week), Water (get two liters a day), Sleep (get eight hours a night), and Supplements (take at least one good vitamin).

In addition, you need to undertake three periodic practices that I think are critical to vitality (and job performance). First, check your vitals every so often. I visit the chiropractor once a month, and try to check my own blood pressure a couple times a week. Second, cleanse your body. For the past several years, I've undertaken a three-day deep-cleaning every six months, generally at the start of spring and the start of fall. Finally, you have to recharge yourself. Do breathing and relaxation exercises throughout the week when you can... and take your vacations!

Many of my busy clients have asked whether they really need vacations. The answer I've given (yes!) is now scientifically confirmed. This August's edition of the journal "The Psychologist" reports findings from Dutch psychologist Jessica de Bloom, who actually studied the effects of vacations and found evidence that they do help you recharge your batteries and perform at a high level.

So as we enter the busy holiday season, think about your next chance to take a vacation. Your business might preclude you from getting away until after Christmas (as mine often does)... but don't skip the vacation. The NEWSS will help you maintain your best performance level every day, but periodically, you just need to get away.

Re: Moderators on vacation Re: Moderators on vacation - Vacation was great! Lots of boating, swimming, sun bathing, and over eating! Yes, I am having a heck of a time getting re-focused. I've been back for over a week now and still haven't gotten a single thing done business wise. To make it even worse, I am in the process of planning another 10 day vacation for next month so my mind isn't coming out of vacation mode.
