Starving Artists Are Also Brave Entrepreneurs
Invited by a dear friend who's a savvy collector of Native American paintings, I took a quick day-trip this weekend to the annual Indian Market in Santa Fe. I met a handful of the best Native American artists in the world (introduced in most cases by my friend), and feasted my eyes on some amazing works of art in "The City Different," which is an artwork in its own right.
I visited with Ben Harjo, a man who enjoys life and pours that joy onto canvas, and who I'd met before once in Oklahoma City. I met Gary Yazzie, and spent some time chatting with his live-wire wife Mary, and felt I'd been able to get to know (a tiny bit) a couple of quality people whose acquaintance instantly enriched my life. I soaked in the images of some amazing paintings, the details of which I can still see when I close my eyes. And, though crowds are not my thing, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
I was struck by the story of a young painter named Daniel, whose painting "The Indian Taco Made By God" captivated me (and cracked me up). What would inspire a young artist to create this tall painting that was a clear homage to - well, to junk food? When he told us about the time he'd spent hungry, down to his last morsel of food, I got it. I remembered when I was a starving artist (of the performing variety), and was down to a single can of green beans to split with my wife on the evening of the final dress rehearsal of an early professional production. And when Daniel's story reminded me that I couldn't wait to order an honest-to-God pizza the next evening, after the show opened and I got my first pay in weeks, I completely understood how the guy could create such a moving tribute to an Indian taco.
The painting was a blue-ribbon winner at the Indian Market, by the way.
Mostly, the weekend was a chance to enjoy great art, great food (that's all they serve in Santa Fe), great high prices (my friend and I began referring to the event as "Indian Mark-up"), and great company. But it also served as a firm reminder that inspiration is still out there, in a million forms, in a million hearts, and despite a million hardships every "little guy" entrepreneur faces every day.
Are you enduring tough times? You're not alone. But I hope you can take a cue from these "starving artists," and turn the hardships into sources of inspiration. Start that business, and struggle to make it - the struggle will set you apart from the legions of victims out there, and so will the opportunity to build wealth (though it may take awhile). It's an opportunity the victims will never even notice, let alone realize.
Order the pizza, with applause still ringing in your ears. Paint the taco, and win the blue ribbon!
