Yeah, Let's Go Back To 1967!

Maybe Obama Wants More Than Archaic Israeli Borders Last week, the president said he wanted Israel to go back to its 1967 borders, plus-or-minus. This would leave the largest airport in that nation less than ten miles from "enemy" territory, easily accessible by every sort of weapon from shoulder-mounted rocket to Super Soaker. It would divide Jerusalem in a dangerous way. And it would, according to the eloquent Bebe Netanyahu, "not happen."

But, see, I don't think the president was speaking only about Israel. In truth, I think Mr. Obama was trying to tell us that he really just wants the whole world - everybody, all of us - to go back to '67.

Wouldn't that be BOSS?

You can kinda see why Mr. Obama likes 1967. The president was six, no doubt presiding over his first grade class in Indonesia, but I'm sure he heard about how things were here. It was the time of sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll, of Timothy O'Leary, of "tune in, turn on, drop out." LBJ, undoubtedly beloved by Mr. Obama because he was the most (now second-most) socialist president in our history, was still on the throne, escalating Vietnam (more than 11,000 U.S. troops died in '67, the third worst year for American casualties, and almost double the 6,000 who've been lost in all the years of Iraq and Afghanistan combined), keeping those taxes nice and high (the top rate was 70%, compared to today's 40%, and capital gains taxes were also higher), and racking up huge entitlement programs for his "Great Society."

Back in '67, House Ways and Means predicted the then-new Medicare program would cost around $12 billion by 1990. It turned out to be $110 billion - off by about a factor of ten - but it was still groovy!

(Given the government's record on estimating the costs of the things it dreams up, that means Obamacare will cost approximately a million bajillion gazillion bucks by 2020.)

But maybe the president's opponents might not mind some of what it would mean to return to '67. Total federal spending was around $150 billion that year (this year's will be about ten times that). The total federal debt was around $340 billion. Inflation was 2.8%, and unemployment was only 3.8%. You could get a home for $24,000, a stamp for five cents, a gallon of milk for a buck, and a gallon of gas for all of 33 cents.

Think of the business you could run, the profits you could make, and the wealth you could build with those kind of economic numbers!

But don't worry. If we all go back to 1967, Mr. Obama and his fellow liberals will be there to fix all of that.

Far out!
