Your Business Will Be As Healthy As You Are
To Your Small Enterprise, You're Too Big To Fail
I've known a lot of entrepreneurs in my long career. These days, in my work as a leadership counselor, I see plenty of clients who've either started their own business or are in the process of doing so. I'm thankful those folks are still out there, because if anything can lead us out of the coming economic storm, it will be entrepreneurship.
Business owners - especially the ones who know they have to do whatever it takes to make the business successful - are extremely hard workers. Nothing wrong with that. But some lose sight of the fact that if their personal vitality fails, so will their business. As far as your little business is concerned, you are critical. You're too big to fail.
There may be a season during which you have to work stupid-long hours to make the business work. One of my high school buddies had his own typesetting business - he worked day and night, rarely stopping to eat a balanced meal or get a good night's sleep. Slowly, both his own health and his business slid down hill. At the end of the ordeal, just when he needed his energy to save the business, he was just too burned out to do it.
I also know hundreds of management consultants who work ridiculously long hours, placing their health (and the rest of the personal lives) in great jeopardy. But the smart ones realize they can't sustain such a pace. The ones who go the distance tend to be the ones who find a way to cut their weekly work schedule down to sixty hours (or less), and get up as early as they have to in order to hit the gym.
You have to take personal responsibility for your own vitality, especially if you own your own business. No one else is going to take care of you. Start with the five key daily health habits I call "The NEWSS" - Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sleep, and Supplements. Eat well; at least, cut out the processed garbage we're all tempted to reach for at meal time. Get at least three good workouts in every week, and six would be better. Make it a habit! And every day, get your two liters of water, your eight hours of sleep, and at least one good nutritional supplement.
If you can't do the minimum on these five habits, it might be time to rethink your business model. Do you need to hire help? Are you wasting time on unproductive activities, especially things that don't produce revenue or contribute to operations? Customers are demanding, sure; but do yours really demand everything you're offering?
Don't be deceived. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to work, and work hard. But remember that when you put your own health on the back burner, you leave your business vulnerable. And these days, when business is tough, you need all the energy you can muster.
