You're Getting Sleepy... Sleepy...
Get The NEWSS To Stay Sharp
It was just one of those mornings... I woke up after only four hours of sleep, and I just couldn't get back to Dreamland. My brain insisted on getting on with the day, well before my body was ready.
I did roll out of bed and head to the gym... it seemed like a better use of my time than continuing a fruitless effort to get back to sleep. I was far from my best, though, and my workout was so crummy I had to abbreviate it for fear of pushing my body too hard. I give myself points for getting out there (the weather's bad, the roads are bad, and it would've been very easy to excuse myself from the daily workout). But it would've been much better if I'd been able to get my eight hours of sleep.
The whole day is messed up when you don't get enough sleep. And I'm far from the only person who went to work groggy on this day - insomnia affects almost a quarter of us! According to this August's journal "Sleep" (yes, there's an academic journal for everything), 23 percent of the U.S. workforce has at least some experience with sleep deficit, and the resultant loss of productivity costs an estimated $63.2 billion every year. Sixty-three billion! Just from missing out on sleep!
The journal described insomnia as characterized by difficulty falling asleep and remaining asleep. There's a broad array of sleep disorders, from not getting enough sack-time to a simple lack of quality sleep. It's intuitive: when you don't get enough good sleep, you are not at your best - just as I wasn't. You need your wits about you if you are on a mission, such as filling a leadership role or running your own business.
In my case, the occurence of insomnia is rare. I know what caused this most-recent bout: holiday cheer (resulting in a little too much alcohol being added to a bloodstream that isn't used to it). Generally, though, you need a combination of strong health habits, all working together, to ensure you have the personal vitality and energy to drive your mission.
Sleep is one of the five key daily health habits I call The NEWSS: Nutrition (start by cutting the garbage-convenience food out of your diet), Exercise (work out at least three times a week, and six is better), Water (get your two liters every day), Sleep (get eight hours!) and Supplements (take at least one good multi-nutrient every day). If you suffer from occasional insomnia, try a month of discipline on these five practices, and you might see a real improvement in your sleep.
Everybody has a bad day now and then... don't let poor sleep give you more bad days than you'd otherwise have to endure. The best leaders and entrepreneurs know they need at least a minimum amount of good, healthy sleep. If you don't already know what poor sleep costs, it might be a fact to which you need to awaken... the sooner, the better.
