What is an Efficiency Expert? Part 1

You may have noticed that I call myself an Efficiency Expert. That's all well and good, and it sounds really neat, but what the heck is an Efficiency Expert anyways?

Here's an official definition: An efficiency expert is "a specialist who seeks to increase the productivity of a business or an industry by improving the efficiency of its operations."

Basically what that definition is saying is that an efficiency expert can help you find ways to run your small business more smoothly by decreasing the amount time it takes you to do things, therefore increasing your productivity and in the end allowing you to free up your valuable time.

You may be thinking, "okay, more time always sounds good, but how does it work? What does an efficiency expert do?".

Let me use myself as an example. I am a virtual assistant, and this means that I partner with small business entrepreneurs. I work with coaches of all kinds, counsellors, therapists, instructors, you name it. Sometimes I work with folks who are simply overwhelmed by having to take care of all the pieces of their business all by themselves, and they not only need someone to help them sort out what's going on, they also need someone to take some tasks off their plate.

For example, let's say that a life coach has been actively marketing their business in a variety of ways:

They also want to teach online workshops in the future and so need to set up a shopping cart, and add new info and sales pages to their website, and figure out a plan on how to let everyone know about these new workshops and get them to sign up for them, and get a teleseminar system set up and running, and create the actual workshops themselves, and, and, AND! Whew, you get the picture how things can easily spin out of control when you're on your own.

Here's where an efficiency expert can step in. In this scenario I would sit down with this coach and together we would look at four very important points:

  1. Current marketing tactics
  2. Overall marketing plan
  3. New product marketing plan
  4. Delegation

In my next article, “What is an Efficiency Expert? Part 2 ~ How Can They Help My Small Business?”, I’ll explain in more detail what is involved with each of these four points, and how an efficiency expert works to improve your small business efficiency.

My name is Sarah MacGregor a.k.a. SMac and I am a Canadian Virtual Assistant, CEO of SMac To The Rescue, and Efficiency Expert who teaches small business owners and entrepreneurs how to increase their business efficiency and get unstuck.  I officially started out as a Virtual Assistant (VA) in 2007. Being insanely organized and an uber planner SMac To The Rescue started off with a bang and it just keeps growing, having now evolved into a Multi-VA practice.

It wasn't long before I realized that some things that seemed like common sense to me were in fact a real struggle for other business owners, and so I naturally fell into the role of breaking down projects into manageable pieces, coaching business owners on how to become more efficient, and bascially coming to the rescue of every solopreneur that crosses my path! I love it when my geekiness perfectly compliments a client's business gaps.

I used to be (and still am) a coding geek - are you a geek too? Let's chat! Love cats? Me too! I will ooh and aah about cats any chance I get. Like to dance? Teach dance? Watch dance of all kinds? Bring it on! I've tried so many different kinds of dance and a few have become my lifelong passions.

Re: How can I promote my site? Re: How can I promote my site? - I think because you have a very visual product you should focus on creating valuable videos and post them to sites like YouTube, Viddler and Expert Village. Some ideas for videos could be an overview of how to create an animated movie, tips for editing, how to find actors ...etc...provide value to your customers and they will flock to you like a magnet. Re: Service Or Product? Re: Service Or Product? - I agree with starting a Service-based Business in the economy. Here is what I think is critical: 1. Researching that your Service business has a market. 2. Marketing the Service with as much leverage as possible. 3. Product-izing the Service (aka Package Expert Knowledge). This will only help elevate you as "the" expert in your niche and make you accessible to people in different price points.
