What's the Most Efficient Way to Make How-To Videos?
Quick! Your client has just asked you to whip together some instructions that they can share with their co-workers describing how to do an online task, and you know for a fact that some of them are not very tech-savvy. Oh yeah, and they need it by the end of the day. Yikes! It could take hours to make up a document that is detailed enough to make sense to everyone and includes stuff like screen shots and links.
If you’ve ever needed to explain computer instructions to someone over the phone, via email, or in a written document you’ll know how valuable how-to videos can be. Especially if you find you have to explain the same thing to different people over and over again!

Your wish has been granted - Jing and Screencast to the rescue!
First let’s look at Jing - Jing is the program that actually does the recording of both the video and the simultaneous audio (it can also take still screenshots). Although the videos have to be less than five minutes long (unless you want to upgrade to a paid account) I find that this has not been an issue for me at all, and in fact it's an incentive to make me plan ahead and keep myself concise. Jing works on both PCs and Macs, and best of all it’s free! Free is always good. Just download it to your computer and you’re ready to roll.
Next let’s look at Screencast - Once you’ve recorded your videos Screencast is the place where you can store and organize them all, and where you can share them from. Screencast is completely online, no need to download anything, and it’s also free (yay again!) It works together with Jing in such a way that as soon as you’re done recording you can click a button and voila! It gets uploaded to your Screencast account. Once the videos are uploaded you can organize them into folders and then share individual videos and/or entire folders.
Jing and Screencast together are powerful tools for you to quickly and easily create how-to videos for your clients, and I highly recommend them both to anyone as a way to increase your business efficiency.

SMac and I am a Canadian Virtual Assistant, CEO of SMac To The Rescue, and Efficiency Expert who teaches small business owners and entrepreneurs how to increase their business efficiency and get unstuck. I officially started out as a Virtual Assistant (VA) in 2007. Being insanely organized and an uber planner SMac To The Rescue started off with a bang and it just keeps growing, having now evolved into a Multi-VA practice. It wasn't long before I realized that some things that seemed like common sense to me were in fact a real struggle for other business owners, and so I naturally fell into the role of breaking down projects into manageable pieces, coaching business owners on how to become more efficient, and bascially coming to the rescue of every solopreneur that crosses my path! I love it when my geekiness perfectly compliments a client's business gaps. I used to be (and still am) a coding geek - are you a geek too? Let's chat! Love cats? Me too! I will ooh and aah about cats any chance I get. Like to dance? Teach dance? Watch dance of all kinds? Bring it on! I've tried so many different kinds of dance and a few have become my lifelong passions.
