How to Speak With a Business Underwriter?
Written by: Joe FerrioloArticle Overview: When speaking to an underwriter do yourself a favor and make sure you are prepared. You should know your business better than anyone else. Be positive; believe in your own cause. If you do not believe in your business why then would an underwriter extend your business credit? How to Speak With a Business Underwriter?
When speaking to an underwriter do yourself a favor and make sure you are prepared. You should know your business better than anyone else. Be positive; believe in your own cause. If you do not believe in your business why then would an underwriter extend your business credit? Help the underwriter to see the "big picture" and why you are successful. Do not ramble on and on with no purpose. We are all busy. Keep it short and to the point.
Have your facts and figures in front of you. Nothing sounds worse than a client stumbling around looking for financial figures. If you do not know the finances it causes doubt to the underwriter that you do not know what is going on in your own business.
Figures to have prepared before making the call:
- 1. Gross sales year to date
- 2. Net Income year to date
- 3. Personal income from the business and other income within the household.
- 4. Last 2 years of business income.
- 5. How is your business handling the economic times? Remember be POSITIVE.
To grow your business and keep business expenses separate from personal. Do not tell an underwriter to consolidate debt. No bank or lender wants to throw money into a sinking ship.
Lastly be personable. We are all human beings with feelings and emotions. Find a common ground and be likeable. No one likes to deal with someone who is rude and grumpy.
