Fuel Your Film, tv, and Animation project with Canadian Film tax credit incentives financing – Film tax Credits Work in Canada
Fuel - The dictionary tells us it's something
that ' sustains and encourages ‘. That’s
pretty well exactly how we position Canadian film tax credit incentives. These credits,
when utilized, or financed properly, are without a doubt providing you with a
very significant portion of your total finance plan.
We never hate to
' diss ' the enemy, but we're on the side of Canadian tax credit
financing when it comes to the current turmoil we hear about in U.S.
states and other markets. If you are a producer
or project owner in the genres of film, television, and animation areas of
entertainment you can benefit from a substantial refundable tax credit based on the Canadian
federal and provincial governments commitment to the revenue creation by this
vibrant industry.
We're big fans of Mr. Jay Epstein who writes on Hollywood financing. At a recent breakfast we attended
Jay spoke of the reality that it's harder to make a small or medium sized
independent than a ' big budget blockbuster ' as he called them. And we agree.
Naturally we're the first to admin that you can be
forgiven for grimacing somewhat when you hear the words ' government ' and ' financing ' in the same sentence.
We felt the same way too. But when you sit down with the various government entities , such as we
have , you get a profound sense
that these government corporations, mostly
Crown corp's in nature are taking seriously
their mandate to administer and refund millions of dollars in film tax credit incentives .
We haven’t counted recently, and it’s almost a
guess, but at least one of every 5 projects we see come across our desks
involves an animated feature. As we noted, computer animation and special
effects features are fully eligible for the same non refundable tax credits.
The amount of funds, non repayable that you can
receive on any given Canadian production (or co -production) by the way, is significant.
Anywhere from 30- 45% of the total financing you need on a project can be
funded solely through the tax credit process.
Clients want choices, and they have them. If you
choose to finance your tax credits you can receive funding on completion of
your project, or, perceived by clients as even more valuable, you can use tax
credit financing to help cash flow and monetize your project.
It always seems a bit of a mystery to clients as to
how tax credits are calculated. A specialized film tax credit incentive
accountant can help you maximize the credits and financing by point out various
nuances about the ' point system ' that is utilized around eligible salaries
for Canadian residents and ‘qualified non residents ‘.
Want a quick example - For you non Canadians there
are ten Canadian provinces - Ontario, BC and Quebec seem to be
most familiar to most of the U.S.
folks that call us. But, if you chose to film or produce in Manitoba you get a 5% producer bonus if a
resident there receives a producer credit. And on it goes...
If anything we've just proven that the bottom line
is that with all the risk and timelines involved in making film, tv and
animation features you certainly want to associated yourself with a small core team in the area of canadian film tax credit incentives and the
financing thereof . And trust, us, this is one area where accounting isn’t
boring - as your tax credit accountant has the ability to maximize your refund
based on his or her knowledge of the Canadian program.
Speak to a trusted, credible, and experienced
Canadian business financing advisor in the financing of tax credits in Canada. Money
for nothing... well almost!

Don't they know there are spammers out there?
- Just a rant....
I have a spam filter on my email, such that every day probably about 20 or more emails a day end up in my Bulk folder and I don't even see them. But I still see dozens of spam messages a day in my Inbox, and I recognize them by their titles, if they just say, "Hello," or "Hi" or some other generic title, I know it's spam and I just delete it without even opening it - as you must do.
Today I got an email from someone, and the title was "wff".
Just that. Not even capital letters.
Normally I would have just deleted it without reading it, but fortunately I saw the name of the author, and it was a name I recognized, not a friend but an acquaintance - someone who works for the Williamsburg Film Festival. And the title "wff" was of course Williamsburg Film Festival.
And I wonder how many businesses send out emails to potential customers with generic subject lines so that their stuff gets sent to the Trash file without even being looked at.

Hi Barbara,
Personally, I do my best to skim all the sender names and subject titles before deleting everything in my "bulk folder" because you never know if you're missing out on something. For instance, I had a friend whose email used to make it safely into my inbox, but then I later found a few of them in mislabeled as spam in the bulk folder.
Re: Hi From START.ac CrowdFunding
- Hi Mal,
I would love to explain a little further. START(dot)ac is a new International CrowdFunding website, and we are launching this May 2012. CrowdFunding is when a large number of people each contribute a small amount of money to fund a project. We are forming a website to host these projects on, and building a strong and large community of individuals who are interested in helping the "next big thing" be a success. Imagine if you were there for the beginning of Google or Apple, and your donations of $1 or $500 helped to bring it to life! Along with major bragging rights, if a project is successful, people who funded it get rewards depending on how much money they gave the project.
At the summary level - We expands the CrowdFunding market to make a home for startup businesses and technology products. STARTac is the professional CrowdFunding site for startups and tech products. We also accept projects in many other categories (listed at the bottom).
We have made nine innovations that improve upon the status quo in CrowdFunding. One is that we have inverted the selection process of projects. Potential projects go into CrowdAudition™, where our members give feedback and advice to improve the projects where relevant. The members' input plays a key role in selection of which projects go to funding. Taking this approach also means that rejected project' drivers know why they were rejected, and can better decide if and how to improve their current project, or start from scratch.
We are assembling a bench of Mentors - experienced entrepreneurs and executives who want to help the new guys avoid the mistakes they made.
Please let me know what you think. When we launch we will be revealing all of our nine innovative programs to the public. We are also looking for projects to host on our website for when we launch. These projects will get extra media attention and publicity throughout our social media. If you have any other questions, PLEASE feel free to ask!
The categories of projects we accept are below:
Art
Comics
Dance
Design
Do Good (altruistic projects)
Fashion
Film
Food
Gadgets
Games
Invention
Kids (Youth-driven projects)
Music
Photography

What not to name your business
- For about 15 years, a print magazine was published called Scarlet Street. Dealt with mystery, horror and science fiction movies, books, etc.
Well..the publisher died, and his co-workers want to keep publishing a magazine in his honor. The pub's long-time companion doesn't want it to be Scarlet Street, so they've decided to call it....
Scarlet The Film Magazine
And I think that's just about the worst name in the world!
It doesn't say what the magazine is, or anything. Book store people will have a heck of a time figuring out where to place it on their magazine shelves.
And... there's already a magazine called Scarlet, based out of the UK. A woman's magazine, which gets plenty of hits when one searches for it on Google.
So any website they do is bound to get lost in the shuffle.
I just think it's a terrible business decision all around.
Research & Development Tax Credits
- If anyone is involved in any sort of R&D I have a contact that can submit an application for you to the Government of Canada to get back upto 80% of expenses you may have incurred.
Best of all - all this at no cost to you. She's worked with companies of all sizes and part of her services, which are included is how to structure yourself in the future to continue to receive these Government Tax Credits.
She can even go back to the last three years in your books to get Tax Credits refunds as well.
Email me and I can share her details with you.
