Canada’s film tax credit (by the way that includes productions in television and the rising category of digital animation) is becoming an intrinsically important method of financing independent productions in Canada.

When discussing these credits around Canadian film productions with clients it seems increasing evident that three key factors are driving the tax credit issue. Let’s quickly recap what we believe those three factors are, and then let’s discuss your ability to monetize those tax credits into valuable cash flow and working capital.

First of all Canada’s tax credits slowly seem to have risen to the top of the popularity pile – there isn’t a day these days when we don’t read about U.S. states either considering lowering the state film tax credits, or in some cases abolishing them altogether. Working with clients on various projects in film, TV and digital animation gives on an insight into how difficult and challenging it can be to put the financing of a film together. Pre production planning and financing is critical, as the current environment forces you to consider revenue solutions around theatrical release, DVD sales, cable and TV rights, etc.

Utilizing tax credit financing allows you to enhance the overall equity, return and financial risk and reward around your project. The film tax credit should be utilized to generate cash flow to assist in completing your project, or in many cases, allowing you to start work on the next one. We are also amazed at when talking to owners and producers as to how long they have been planning certain projects, and the overall financial undertaking they need to invest in vis a vis their time .

Monetizing (i.e. financing) your tax credit will take away a lot of the uncertainty around your productions success. Don't they know there are spammers out there? - Just a rant.... I have a spam filter on my email, such that every day probably about 20 or more emails a day end up in my Bulk folder and I don't even see them. But I still see dozens of spam messages a day in my Inbox, and I recognize them by their titles, if they just say, "Hello," or "Hi" or some other generic title, I know it's spam and I just delete it without even opening it - as you must do. Today I got an email from someone, and the title was "wff". Just that. Not even capital letters. Normally I would have just deleted it without reading it, but fortunately I saw the name of the author, and it was a name I recognized, not a friend but an acquaintance - someone who works for the Williamsburg Film Festival. And the title "wff" was of course Williamsburg Film Festival. And I wonder how many businesses send out emails to potential customers with generic subject lines so that their stuff gets sent to the Trash file without even being looked at.

For instance, I had a friend whose email used to make it safely into my inbox, but then I later found a few of them in mislabeled as spam in the bulk folder.
Prospects in animation business in coming years. - Animation business has great prospects with growing demand especially with screens being used in malls/ retail stores and online promotions with videos besides the regular Television advertising. After the Success of Youtube, the demand for videos has grown tremendously. The animation industry feeds on quality work, a good high-end story, latest technology, graphic and sound effects. Even a good 1 min video might take couple of months or work time and new employees being hired to speed up the process. There is ample scope for this industry to grow and future for entrepreneurs. Please comment.
What not to name your business - For about 15 years, a print magazine was published called Scarlet Street. Dealt with mystery, horror and science fiction movies, books, etc. Well..the publisher died, and his co-workers want to keep publishing a magazine in his honor. The pub's long-time companion doesn't want it to be Scarlet Street, so they've decided to call it.... Scarlet The Film Magazine And I think that's just about the worst name in the world! It doesn't say what the magazine is, or anything. Book store people will have a heck of a time figuring out where to place it on their magazine shelves. And... there's already a magazine called Scarlet, based out of the UK. A woman's magazine, which gets plenty of hits when one searches for it on Google. So any website they do is bound to get lost in the shuffle. I just think it's a terrible business decision all around.
