Why The Canada Film Tax Credit Program Is Critical To Your Film Financing
How could a government tax credit incentive possibly be ' critical ' to your success in film financing? The answer is very simple : The Canada film tax credit program is usually the last piece of your financing , and we see many cases where it allows the other components of your project, i.e. equity, debt and ' gap ' to come together in a final fashion .
And that of course allows you press the button on ' ready, action, camera, shoot ' which is what your project is all about. And to be clear, we're talking about the three genres of entertainment - film / movies, television, and animation. Animation credits, somewhat unheard of years ago, are quickly gaining traction in the industry as people flock to this type of entertainment. Think Shrek!
Tax incentives in Canada give film investors the ability to complete financing successfully. Pick a number, any number... we'll pick one for you - 30 - 40%! That is a typical amount you can expect to receive on a production tax credit in Canada. The actual final exact amount depends on the provincial geography you are shooting or producing in - as each province has adopted separate schedules of reimbursement .
These tax film financing incentives have once again brought producers and owners of project back to Canada. While in the past a major decision around Canadian content seemed to revolve around the lower priced Canadian dollar the Canadian ' loonie ' ( that's what we call a dollar up here!) is touching parity as we head into 2011- so the whole forex issue is no longer the driver - but Canada film tax credits are .
If you are not a major movie studio the film financing incentive provided to the industry by the production services tax credit has become one of the most important tools in your financing plan for your project .
The Canadian tax credits stimulate of course revenues that are generated from the industry as a whole.
Let's recap some basics, so you can fast track and simplify your film financing project. It all about ' qualifying ' - you either do or you don’t. And if you qualify, you get your funding via a non repayable tax credit. The power of the tax credit increases significantly when you monetize or cash flow or finance (they all mean the same thing!) your tax incentive credit. These credits can be financed when your project is completed, returning cash flow to the owners, or , as importantly , they can be used as a financing strategy to generate cash flow as you film or produce your project and funds are expended .
What qualifies in your project surprises most of our clients on the upside! Including many of the costs of a project you may be surprised on.
We love the expression that the word ' Team ' is an acronym for ' together everyone achieves more". Your team in film fax credit finance and film financing is critical, so aligning yourself with a Canadian tax credit business financing advisor, as well as a qualified entertainment accountant will only do two things - ensure you qualify, and maximize your credits.
And we humbly submit that’s what it is all about.

Don't they know there are spammers out there?
- Just a rant....
I have a spam filter on my email, such that every day probably about 20 or more emails a day end up in my Bulk folder and I don't even see them. But I still see dozens of spam messages a day in my Inbox, and I recognize them by their titles, if they just say, "Hello," or "Hi" or some other generic title, I know it's spam and I just delete it without even opening it - as you must do.
Today I got an email from someone, and the title was "wff".
Just that. Not even capital letters.
Normally I would have just deleted it without reading it, but fortunately I saw the name of the author, and it was a name I recognized, not a friend but an acquaintance - someone who works for the Williamsburg Film Festival. And the title "wff" was of course Williamsburg Film Festival.
And I wonder how many businesses send out emails to potential customers with generic subject lines so that their stuff gets sent to the Trash file without even being looked at.

Hi Barbara,
Personally, I do my best to skim all the sender names and subject titles before deleting everything in my "bulk folder" because you never know if you're missing out on something. For instance, I had a friend whose email used to make it safely into my inbox, but then I later found a few of them in mislabeled as spam in the bulk folder.
What not to name your business
- For about 15 years, a print magazine was published called Scarlet Street. Dealt with mystery, horror and science fiction movies, books, etc.
Well..the publisher died, and his co-workers want to keep publishing a magazine in his honor. The pub's long-time companion doesn't want it to be Scarlet Street, so they've decided to call it....
Scarlet The Film Magazine
And I think that's just about the worst name in the world!
It doesn't say what the magazine is, or anything. Book store people will have a heck of a time figuring out where to place it on their magazine shelves.
And... there's already a magazine called Scarlet, based out of the UK. A woman's magazine, which gets plenty of hits when one searches for it on Google.
So any website they do is bound to get lost in the shuffle.
I just think it's a terrible business decision all around.
Re: Hi From START.ac CrowdFunding
- Hi Mal,
I would love to explain a little further. START(dot)ac is a new International CrowdFunding website, and we are launching this May 2012. CrowdFunding is when a large number of people each contribute a small amount of money to fund a project. We are forming a website to host these projects on, and building a strong and large community of individuals who are interested in helping the "next big thing" be a success. Imagine if you were there for the beginning of Google or Apple, and your donations of $1 or $500 helped to bring it to life! Along with major bragging rights, if a project is successful, people who funded it get rewards depending on how much money they gave the project.
At the summary level - We expands the CrowdFunding market to make a home for startup businesses and technology products. STARTac is the professional CrowdFunding site for startups and tech products. We also accept projects in many other categories (listed at the bottom).
We have made nine innovations that improve upon the status quo in CrowdFunding. One is that we have inverted the selection process of projects. Potential projects go into CrowdAudition™, where our members give feedback and advice to improve the projects where relevant. The members' input plays a key role in selection of which projects go to funding. Taking this approach also means that rejected project' drivers know why they were rejected, and can better decide if and how to improve their current project, or start from scratch.
We are assembling a bench of Mentors - experienced entrepreneurs and executives who want to help the new guys avoid the mistakes they made.
Please let me know what you think. When we launch we will be revealing all of our nine innovative programs to the public. We are also looking for projects to host on our website for when we launch. These projects will get extra media attention and publicity throughout our social media. If you have any other questions, PLEASE feel free to ask!
The categories of projects we accept are below:
Art
Comics
Dance
Design
Do Good (altruistic projects)
