What the “World’s Greatest Pickup Artist” Can Teach You About Building a Lucrative Freelance Business
“If anyone catches me buying this right now,” I thought to myself, “I’m done. That’s it. Time to grab a few survival tools, move to the hills, and spend the rest of my life in a cave dining on wild, roasted squirrel and pine nuts.”
But, like the gullible, easily persuaded knucklehead that I am, I bought it anyway. I simply couldn’t resist.
As it turns out, this unusual book – with its big, black cover, risqué cover art, and exceedingly cheesy gold-plated edges – turned out to be perhaps the most eye-opening and thought-provoking book I’ve ever read in my entire life.
Maybe you’ve heard of it. In fact, if you’re a single guy, I pretty much guarantee you have.
It’s called The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, by Neil Strauss, a.k.a. “Style.”
So … WHAT ON EARTH convinced me to buy a book on how to pick up women?
Well … for one, I AM a single guy. Have been for several years. So hey … why not? I sure could use the help. Not only that, but I love to read, too. Especially the “how to” stuff.
AND THEN there was the thought of meeting and attracting women completely out of my league.
Count me in!
But even the thought of THAT wasn’t the dealmaker for me. What ultimately convinced me to buy the book was the stellar reputation Neil Strauss had built for himself.
You see … “Style” (that’s his pseudonym in the “seduction community”) used to be just Neil Strauss, the “Writer Guy.”
That’s it.
Just a 5’6”, bald, pale, skinny guy with a big, crooked nose and an overwhelmingly lackluster track record with the ladies.
HOWEVER …
… during his research for writing The Game, he got the opportunity to meet and hang out with some of the world’s most notorious Lotharios. Guys with ominous pseudonyms like “Mystery” and “Tenmagnet” and “Toecutter.”
Intriguing.
Strauss traveled with these legendary ladies’ men all over the world. He learned their techniques. He observed them “in the field.” And he modeled himself after them.
And as a result, he began to completely transform himself from Neil Strauss, the “Writer Guy” into “Style,” the “Pickup Artist” … and wound up dating some of the most beautiful women in the world.
It gets better …
Once his book, The Game, made The New York Times bestseller list in 2005, his reputation as a seduction specialist blasted right through the stratosphere. Now he was no longer known as some guy who could pick up chicks here and there.
He was now the “World’s Greatest Pickup Artist.”
And once his “transformation” was complete, Strauss recognized a tremendous opportunity. Since he was now THE recognized expert in his field AND had a starving crowd desperate to learn from him (single men, in this instance), he knew there was money to be made.
So he parlayed the success of his book and his newly acquired reputation, and built a thriving multimillion-dollar business. He published ebooks … held seminars … sold DVDs … promoted membership websites … and more.
As a result, he’s now an extremely wealthy guy. Worth millions and millions of dollars, in fact. And all because he’s considered a recognized authority in the field of sex, dating, and relationships.
He’s doing what he wants … when he wants … how he wants … and where he wants …
And that’s why I’m writing you today … to show you how to become a recognized authority in your field – just like Neil Strauss did in the sex, dating, and relationships field – so you can build your business and increase your personal wealth exponentially.
I’m also going to show you a simple strategy you can use in the next 30 minutes to help position yourself as an expert in your chosen field. Best of all, this strategy is 100% free!
To get started toward becoming a recognized authority, here’s the first thing you should do …
Find a Role Model!
When Neil Strauss first got started in the seduction community, he needed a lot of help from outside sources. Fortunately, he connected with some of the best “pickup artists” in the world … and learned as much as he could from these newfound role models.
Do the same.
Find out who the very best experts in YOUR field are. It doesn’t matter if you’re a travel writer, copywriter, graphic designer, or Internet marketer. There are people in each field who are “recognized gurus” right now … and you can learn a lot from them.
For example, let’s say you want to become a copywriter. The first thing you could do is meet other well-established copywriters and learn as much from them as you can.
No established copywriters in your area? You can attend a conference, like AWAI’s FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp event held each November in Delray Beach, FL. That’s where you’ll meet some of today’s most successful copywriters face-to-face in a fun and casual environment. I know of many established, “expert” copywriters who got their career underway this way. Fellow AWAI members Monica Day and Krista Jones immediately come to mind.
If you can’t meet up with a role model face-to-face, you can always order some of their information products and master them in the comfort of your own home. (I got my start as a writer with AWAI’s Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting, then followed that up with AWAI’s Master’s Program, the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Program, and more … )
Once you feel you’ve got enough real-world experience AND education, and you’re ready to become a recognized authority yourself, it’s time to start letting the world know about it.
Make Yourself Famous!
To really let the world know who you are and why you’re an expert, here are a few strategies you can use …
Write Your Own Articles. Of all the strategies you’ve got at your disposal to establish yourself as a recognized authority in your field, I feel this one is the most important. By far. Why? Because it forms the foundation of everything else you’ll do.
At the core is the simple “how to” article. Master the “how to” article and you can apply this to all the other strategies I’ll mention here. It’s incredibly important to get this right … and it’s something that I continually strive to improve myself.
One resource I’ve found indispensable is Jim Edwards’ Turn Words Into Traffic. I refer to it constantly. It can help you write high-quality articles in no time flat … and get them published, too. INSIDE TIP: To help let the world know about your articles, for FREE, you can post them on ezinearticles.com.
Write Your Own Books. This is also a very effective strategy for boosting your credibility as an expert. Think about it. Imagine if you were to go up to someone and tell him you’re the author of a book. It doesn’t matter if you wrote a book about how to hopscotch across the Arctic Circle with your eyes shut (well, maybe … )
My point is … if you write a book and get it published (either by a publisher or self-published), it will boost your credibility significantly. Period.
One product I’ve found quite helpful in this area is Nick Daws’ How to Write ANY Book in 28 Days … Or Less! It shows you exactly what its title promises. It’s not super easy to pull off, but it’s definitely possible.
For some ideas, you can also check out the book, Damn! Why Didn’t I Write That? How Ordinary People Are Raking in $100,000 or More Writing Nonfiction Books & How You Can Too!by Marc McCutcheon.
Create Your Own Information Products. This is what Neil Strauss did. He made his own DVDs … included MP3 recordings … created PDF special reports … and more. With information products, you’re only limited by your imagination.
I highly suggest jumping online and seeing what others are already doing in their field … and modeling their success. Don’t “rip them off,” of course, but get a handle on what’s working … and then do it even better!
For example, if you’re an expert at fly fishing in western Canada, check out the other Canadian fly-fishing websites and see what they’re up to. Make Your Knowledge Sell! by Ken Evoy is a solid resource for learning how to create your own information products. It’s written in a style that just about anyone will be able to understand instantly … which is perfect for insanely impatient readers like me.
Create Your Own Videos. This is a relatively new strategy … but I’ve got a strong, strong feeling that 2009 is going to be the year that video marketing hits the “Big Time.”
You might argue, “Video marketing is already huge!” … but believe me, there’s still room for tremendous growth in this area. Nonetheless, the video website YouTube is already the #3 most popular website in the world … with only Google and Yahoo ahead of it. So it’s safe to say it gets boatloads of traffic every single second.
By the way, you don’t necessarily need to get “world famous” from your video for this strategy to work for you. Just creating a few quality “how to” videos and sending the links to your prospects and/or posting the videos on your website can take you a long, long way toward establishing yourself as an expert.
Plus, many entrepreneurs are intimidated by the thought (and the perceived amount of work) involved in creating an online video. This is good for you. Don’t be discouraged. It’s not as difficult as you might think.
I suggest checking out the book YouTube for Business: Online Video Marketing for Any Business and other related video-marketing books to find out more about how you can incorporate video marketing into your overall repertoire.
Build Your Own Website. These days, if you don’t have a website, it’s going to be difficult to sell yourself as an expert. Fortunately, building a website from scratch is much, much easier than you think … especially with some of the tools available today.
For example, if you wanted to start your own blog (more on this in a minute) you could simply go to WordPress.com and be up and running in minutes. Or, if you wanted to take things one step further, you could get some more advanced software like XSitePro2 or Site Build It.
All are worth a look and seriously worth considering if you wish to display your expertise. But simply having a website isn’t enough. Once that’s up and running, you’ll also want to …
Broadcast Your Own Newsletter and E-Zine. This is a cheap and easy way to get the word out to THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of readers. The trick is making sure you’ve got a constant supply of fresh and helpful information to give your readers … and to send it out regularly.
A great way to come up with newsletter ideas is to search forums or blogs related to your topic. For example, let’s say you want to become a recognized expert on remodeling old Volkswagen Beetles. Simply type in “Volkswagen Beetle” and “blog” or “forum” and check out what sites you find. See what the common problems and concerns are.
Address these problems and concerns in your newsletter or e-zine … and then repeat. By keeping your finger on the pulse of what your audience is thinking … what they’re worrying and concerned about … and then answering these concerns effectively in your newsletter or e-zine, your “expert” status will rise very, very quickly.
Speak at Seminars, Conferences, and Events (or Hold Your Own). Yes, it’s true. People are more afraid of death than they are of public speaking. At first, I agreed.
While I was living in Honolulu, Hawaii, a few years ago, I joined the local Toastmasters … and was absolutely terrified the first few times I gave public speaking a go. But I soon settled down, and it became fun.
Speaking at seminars, business lunches, corporations, functions, and other venues can really give your credibility as an expert a boost. Not only will the audience consider you an expert (provided you’ve done your homework and do a good job, of course), but you can also use the opportunity to sell your other offerings (books, courses, etc.) and profit from it as well.
Bob Bly’s Get Famous Giving Speeches has some great strategies. By the way, once you’re REALLY established in your field, you can hold your own seminars! That’s what Neil Strauss does … and you can, too.
Send Out Your Own Press Releases. If you’ve got anything at all you’d like the press to know about, why not send them a quick press release!
For example, if you’ll be speaking at an event … or you’ve created a new information product … published a new book … launched a new website … or anything else you’re involved with … let the press know! Just use the simple strategies to get your press release noticed, and sooner or later, the press will pick it up. And if your press release gets picked up by a major media player – and you’ve covered all your bases – your expert status will be virtually guaranteed.
By the way, if you’d like to learn more about ALL of these strategies, I highly recommend a book by Bob Bly called, Become a Recognized Authority in Your Field in 60 Days or Less! (By the way, you’ll have a much easier time getting your hands on this book online than by going on a treasure hunt in your local bookstore.)
And finally, I did promise you that you could get started establishing yourself as a recognized expert in as little as 30 minutes … for free.
I lied.
You can actually get started in just 5 minutes.
Here’s how …
Start Your Own Blog!
Blogging is hot, hot, hot right now … and you can start using blogs to establish yourself as an expert in your field right away.
All you have to do is go to one of the free blogging sites (I highly suggest WordPress.com) and follow the directions. It’s drop-dead simple. It only takes a few minutes to open an account … and once your blog is up and running, you can start writing about your chosen field and begin establishing yourself as an expert right away!
Of course, you’ll want to take steps to improve the functionality and effectiveness of your blog. Just writing content is the beginning.
However, content is BY FAR the most important part of your blog and establishing yourself as an expert. You can worry about the technical stuff later. Just get writing about your chosen field and go from there.
And when you’re ready to take your blog to the next level, you can do that, too. I just received John Reese’s Traffic Secrets 2.0, and it goes into tremendous detail on how to profit from a blog.
Before I wrap up, please keep the following in mind in your efforts to become a recognized expert …
Why You Should “Sharpen the Saw”
In the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey, he suggests an activity called “sharpening the saw.”
This is the idea that you should stay continually up-to-date in your chosen field. Educating yourself on new developments. Mastering the fundamentals … again and again and again.
You simply must do this – consistently – if you wish to become and remain a recognized expert in your field. Remember, your audience is smart. They’re exposed to many other experts who do their homework and know what they’re talking about.
Stay up-to-speed in your chosen field and make sure you let your audience know that you know what the hell you’re talking about … at all times!
Do all this, and you can soon call yourself a “recognized expert” in your chosen field.
Just don’t try to move in on “Style.”
He’s the master.

It was shaping up to be the most embarrassing book purchase I’ve ever made in my entire life.

Leanne Hoagland-SmithAre your sales where you want them to be? Will you be one of the few who achieves sales or business success or one of the many who have failed to change? Are you tired of being told you are like everyone else? Then you may find my first book on sales of interest. Be the Red Jacket in the Sea of Gray Suits, The Keys to Unlocking Sales available at Amazon or at http://www.processspecialist.com/red-jacket.htm. This book is a reflection of my no-nonsense approach to improving sales to overall business results. If you are truly committed to making sustainable changes, then I can help you secure a positive return on your investment because I focus on executable solutions not telling you the problems you already know you have. From training to corporate (group) coaching to executive one on one coaching, my approach is to assess, create awareness, build a goal driven action plan and then execute. The bottom line question is "Not do you or your employees know it, but do you or they want to do it?" Please call for a free strategy session at 219.759.5601. - Visit Leanne Hoagland-Smith's Website |
