Re: Best way to start a business?
- I'd have to agree with christew.
When I started my business I really didn't have a clue as to what I was getting into or what it would take to see it through. I had to learn the ins and outs while already running it.
I think the best way to learn is to just get your feet wet... or dive right in. I'm definitely a "hands-on" learner, and there's no better time to learn than when you "have" to learn. If I wanted my website to become a success, I was going to have to learn, otherwise it would've failed.
Granted I don't think this works for every business out there. This is more manageable when starting an online business, but I do think you need to do your research and learn before starting an offline business. There's a lot of money at stake and a lot more risk involved. In that sense, yes, an apprenticeship might be a viable option.
Re: How John Chow Makes $40,000/mo from blogging
- My point of view is this...
If he is making more money than me then I can probably learn something from him.
If he has more traffic than me I can probably learn something.
If he can build a strong community of tens of thousands of loyal followers then I can probably learn something from him.
If he's managed to do something I've yet to do or haven't had success with then I can probably learn something from him.
etc.
I agree he's not the best source of info on marketing, and he pushes aff. stuff heavily, but just the fact he does this tells you there's something to learn from him.
I try and be a more open minded and open ears sort of guy.
Re: Using Craigslist SEO to Promote Your Website
- To build a Link Wheel you need to join several social sites such as squidoo, blogger, wordpress, livejournal, hubpages, etc... around 10 or so should be sufficient.
Then, you build one site such as Hubpages and link it back to your main website. Then you build a second site on say Blogger and link it to your Hub that you built, and to your main website. Then you build another site and link it to your last site and to your main website. Just keep repeating this until all sites are linked to each other one-by-one.
When you are done each site will be linking to only the site before it and back to your main website.
These can work really well. I've only recently gotten started using them but so far I have seen good results. Don't expect just one link wheel to skyrocket your rankings, especially in a competitive niche. However, they are a good thing to include in an overall link building campaign.
Preparing a list
- I'm looking to build a list. Can you point me into some directions of where "without paying for a $100.00+ rebook) where to go to learn how to build a list?
Re: Top Banner Help
- Hi David - constructive advice is always welcomed!
1) The banner was done to match the standard banner size that we use across the website (on the homepage it's the famous entrepreneurs, for example) so we wanted to maintain a consistent look.
2) I like it - we have had a number of suggestions about the top banner and do need to change it!
3) The homepage was designed mainly for branding as well as SEO purposes instead of navigation. Most of the people who find my site don't end up on the home page - they end up on an article or forum post because of the SEO work that we've done. The goal of the homepage it to make the website look like an authority site and make people (partners, advertisers, authors, viewers) want to learn more.
