How to Find Customers for Your Mural Painting Business

One of the biggest obstacles in growing a successful mural business is finding customers. There is definitely a market for mural paintings, but even your ideal clients may not know they want a mural - yet!

The key is to show people the potential of (1) what you can create, (2) what the end result looks like and (3) ideas for interior and exterior facades that your market has not yet thought of. A mural of faux painting on a wall can be a great alternative to boring wallpaper, expensive artwork or the hassle of remodeling projects. But do potential buyers know this?

It is important to be at the right place at the right time. Find shoppers who are ready to make a change in their home or place of business - there is a marketplace of potential buyers waiting to be discovered.

1. Increase Your Exposure to Your Target Market

When people are making decisions about remodeling their homes or landscaping exteriors, they often visit home and garden shows to get ideas and advice. Give your business lots of exposure by being at these home and garden shows and interacting with these people.

Show samples of your work, including unique solutions that you can provide. Hold a drawing or giveaway and collect contact information from visitors so that you can follow-up, either with a newsletter or information on upcoming discounts or sales.

2. Demonstrate Your Skills Through Workshops

Host a free or paid workshop where you teach people to design their own murals or take on faux painting projects. People enjoy learning new skills and completing simple tasks. However, when it comes to enhancing the beauty or increasing the value of their homes, most hobbyists hire professionals to do the job.

Through workshops, you can show off your skills and knowledge and let potential customers get to know you in a casual setting. Your warm market has just increased to the number of people in your workshops plus the number of people they know whom they can refer to you.

You can announce your workshop for free by sending a short press release to your local newspaper or radio station. If your community has an annual class schedule, you can usually include your course listing and gain exposure to thousands of people in your area, and you may also be able to advertise your event at your local library.

3. Use the Internet to Find New Customers

More and more people are looking for local businesses online (in addition to or instead of the traditional yellow page book). Local search sources that are affordable and receive a large amount of traffic include Google Local, City Search and Super Pages. It is very cheap to advertise here, and sometimes free.

As long as you are marketing online, put together a website. For about $5/month, you can get your own painting business website that you can design yourself. This is a low-cost way to show off your work, share your knowledge and let potential customers learn about your mural business without the hassle of an uncomfortable sales pitch.

Tisch's book includes content on "Welcoming Customers", "The New Art of Customization", "The Challenges of Customer Diversity" and "Offering Something Extra to Your Customers" to name a few.

The Best Business Books Ever: The 100 Most Influential Business Books You'll Never Have Time to Read - this is a fascinating book about the history of Business theory, and I'd recommend it to anybody. 2. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
Re: Fashion Re: Fashion - Nana, At you choice you may choose to research the fashion industry a bit more. There is obviously a Business side to it as well as a creative side to it. Find out all the types of roles that exist in the industry. Some that come to mind merchandiser, Window dresser, floor plan organizer (someone needs to determine the layout of a retail store to best sell the goods), fashion consultant (Yorkdale mall has fashion consultants that take you around and tell you what looks great on you - you also get a cut from the sales). This is what I've observed from the business side, you may know more. All these roles I've written about will help you grow as a business person and make the contacts in the industry...possible stepping stones. But further more you'll also notice that you need to develop some business acumen possibly tailored to the fashion industry. When I was at Ryerson I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur someday too. I knew I needed some basic business courses to get a foundation to build from. I was in a Tech/Business Major (I'm sure Fashion has something similar - Fashion/Business Major) and then started to create my own minor. Here are some of the courses I took: Marketing, Law, Entrepreneurial, Management, consulting.. and a few more . Also, I'm sure that within the Fashion Major there are also courses you have to take where you can use your creative side and create designs. Typically within a Major there are focuses you can choose - ask the program coordinator. Your next step is to do some research. 1. Visit Commercial retail outlets like H&M, Banana Republic, or jacob. Tell the Manager your doing some research for University and would like to know what types of Corporate roles exist aside from the roles on the retail floor (like sales associates). If she asks you to elaborate then you can use some of the roles I mentioned above. 2. With this information in hand you can visit the Ryerson Fashion department and inquire with the Program Coordinator on what focus within the Fashion Degree would help you the most. In my program there were 5 different focuses within the Tech/Business program. Just a quick aside. A good friend of mine too has a dream of fashion. he want to create a niche fashion line tailored to skinny men (I can't mention the style). He's in Business school but not in the Fashion program... He's in International Business but all his Minor courses are tailored to running a successful business ... similar to the ones I mentioned above for myself. I have no doubt in my mind he'll make it 'cos his vision is that strong.
