Write Your Own Cookbook 1-2-3
Do you have some interesting and unique recipe ideas that you would like to get paid to share? Writing a cookbook can be a great way to make money in the cooking field without feeling the pressure of having to cook everyday.
You Have Options
There is more than one income opportunity when it comes to writing a cookbook. In addition to producing a hardcover or paperback cookbook, you can also develop a simple downloadable recipe resource for very little cost. You can also build a recipe website (paid for by advertisers or member-supported) where you regularly submit new cooking ideas, and/or visitors can add their own contributions.
Since there are already so many cooking books and websites available, think about a common problem that people have with cooking or recipes and how you can create a solution for them. Some examples include 5-minute meals for people with little time or patience or gluten-free cooking for those who need to follow a gluten-free diet but still want variety in their meals.
What Do You Need?
As a writer, you will need a computer, printer, internet connection and general office supplies (depending on the type of cookbook business you are starting). Since most likely you will be writing from home, you can spare the expense of an office, commute time, staff and other costs that many small businesses incur.
There are also several writing tools that can help you speed up the writing process and make the most of your time, like dictation software, ebook creation software and even cookbook software. Time-saving tools can be especially important if you plan on writing more than one book.
Publishing
You can work with a publisher who will help promote your cookbook for you, or you can self-publish your product and avoid the high cost of working with a publisher.
There are several resources online for self-publishing, many offering advice and guidance. There are several options, from self-publishing a book in print to free self-publishing of ebooks for devices like the iPhone of Kindle.
If you are publishing your own cookbooks, you will want to get an International Standard Book Number (ISBN). You can apply though the ISBN website.
If you decide you submit your manuscript to a publisher, address your package to the editor using his or her specific name (not just "editor"). A website called Book Market offers a free list of over 400 book publishers, including names of editors, that you can use. It can take months to hear back from an editor, so be patient and be prepared to submit your work to several publishers.
Since Amazon is such a popular bookstore offering lots of exposure for writers, may authors want to use the website to sell their books. If this interests you, there is a book entitled "Sell Your Book on Amazon". Not surprisingly, you can find it on the Amazon site.
Do not be afraid to get started writing. With so many options, writing and publishing your own cookbook may be much easier that you think.
