Convert an Asteroid into a Think Tank
Today's business leaders need to focus on what's above their head. Set high standards and reach for the stars.
The IEEE recently published a chart titled Commercial Orbital Launches, which outlined the expenditures by agency type marking the commercial satellite industry accounting for almost half the revenues associated with space travel. This year, 2009, marks the beginning of Virgin Galactic's commercial space flights. Today's entrepreneur should focus on the long term investment potential of the great resources of celestial bodies. Our hopes and aspirations for interstellar voyage may bring us into a new boon economy.
Humanity's greatest foretellable sacrifice will be the competition to leave the solar system. Our eyes already see far beyond what our vehicles can accomplish. This side-effect of light being the fastest travelling visible particle in the universe, combined with advancement in understand of the electromagnetic energy, already lay the groundwork for our most innate desires to expand the human race's knowledge.
Despite this fact, our next steps are not in the far reaches of other stars or the earth-like planets orbitting them. Engineering and innovation must produce the building blocks to enable our feet. This leaves a great question of resource management in the new space era, and today's intellectual should focus on the tasks that lie on Mars and in the asteroid belt. Imagine the type of complex one could design, and the methods and robotic craft needed to build it, that will be the backbone of the space mining industry of tomorrow. Already, companies like Red Storm are focusing on the robotic future of mining by practicing here on Earth.
It seems a bit tight here on planet Earth. As of the time of writing this, the global population clock has just topped6,773,854,005 on July 27, 2009 and by July 1, 2010 it is estimated at 6,845,146,634. By 2040, we'll be at 16.2 B or more. The time is now. Humanity must quickly populate Mars and turn it into a garden. The resources for this are located in the cosmos: we but have to collect them. Time is of the essence; we must make a better cherry picker. There is enormous potential for raw resource mining in space. Focusing on a way to automate this process in interstellar space is a key facet of the job of the future. Make that happen today.
