Don’t Think of your Goals, Think From your Goals

A slight but profound change to think from you’re goal. Most of us have been told that having your goals clearly defined is what will get you to the goal. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that most of you did not set a goal to be where you are today. So what gives? You know what your goals are; you can describe your dream house, car, vacation or trip.

Athletes do this all the time. They think from their goal. Jack Nicklaus talks about it in “Golf My Way”, Marilyn King talks about it in “Olympian Thinking” and Mary Lou Retton was asked by reporters after her perfect 10 what she was doing right before she got into position at the 1984 Olympics, all thought from their goal. This is one of those subtle but fine points that makes all the difference in the world.

In other words rather than thinking of your dream car, think from your dream car. Take a few minutes and imagine yourself actually driving your dream car. Picture yourself picking the car up from the show room. See yourself in the driver’s seat driving off the lot, you can smell the newness. You hear what music is playing; see your spouse and yourself going out for a night on the town in that dream car. See yourself giving the valet a $100 bucks to make sure the car is well taken care of while you enjoy a fabulous romantic dinner at your favorite world class restaurant. Then see yourself handing another $100 dollar bill to the valet for parking the car at a top night club for dancing and drinks. Is it a crisp winter night or a cool summers evening. Now see yourself driving back to your dream home, hear the music, and picture the drive and conversation on the way to that dream home and the night of intimacy in store.

Dream home - 5 bedrooms, 5 bath, and 4 car garage with pool. What? You thought I would finish with a Jackie Collins type novel. That’s for you to do. But you see how just thinking about a goal, like the car house or trip is just a little lackluster compared to thinking from the goal.

Practice this daily and you may soon live from your dream.

Re: Quote of the Day - Ted Turner Re: Quote of the Day - Ted Turner - Hi Evan, I mentioned on another thread that I'm reading Saint Joan of Arc by Vita Sackville West. I think Joan of Arc set some pretty high goals, for an unknown peasant girl from an unimportant village in the middle of nowhere much... Goals: 1. Go and see the Dauphin! 2. Help him relieve the siege of Orleans!! 3. To lead the Dauphin to his coronation at Rheims!!! The first time she tried to put this plan into action, by seeking permission from her local feudal lord to travel, he told her minder to "reduceret eam ad domum sui patris et daret ei alapas" which is to say, "take her home to her father and give her a smacking". The rest is history!
Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - [quote="BuzzAroundBooks":2ijq3b5e]As a small business owner, should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals? My friend's father is a relatively successful entrepreneur and it's his belief that you should primarily hire employees with no ambition because you can get away with paying them less and they're less likely to leave (thus saving you money from a high turnover rate). "Grunts" are the way to go, even though ambitious workers are typically smarter. What do you think?[/quote:2ijq3b5e] I say YES to hirin employees with no Goals!!! they make great "front-line" employees as long as you have carefully documented your process for them to follow. They typically are open to perform routine administrative tasks and they work for a much lower wage. I know what I've said is pretty gloomy but it's reality from my experience. Occasionally one of the "employees with no goals" will stand up and say, "I love working here". You pluck these individuals and promote them to tasks which require more decisions.
