What You Do Best
Each time you reconsider
your market positioning, be sure to include a few exercises to hone in on what
you do best in your business. You want to tease out those activities that you
absolutely love to do and those activities you are the very best at in the
world.
When you are clear on
what they are, you can focus your time on what you are uniquely qualified to
deliverand leverage your natural strengths to be, do and have more.
To focus on what you do best, you can't be the one to do everything that piles
up on your desk. You can't afford to get consumed with the tasks you struggle
with or the tasks you detest. You must learn to delegate, automate and
outsource everything that does not perfectly fit that specific range of your
natural strengths and passion.
It's easy to make excuses why you must be the one to do everything. But
remember that with each additional task or responsibility you hold on to, you
have less time to devote to what you do best. And instead of making your
business more secure, you limit the growth and success of your business.
The importance of this exercise was reinforced today by two Canadians:
Dan Sullivan, calls it your unique ability. "It's a combination of your personal
talents, passions, and skills. You've always had this ability, but you may
never have stopped to clearly identify it. Few people do."
Dan says that when you
begin to figure out this important foundation of who you are, you'll understand
what you do best in life, what you love doing most, and what makes the most
difference for the most people.
Paul Copcutt, calls
it leveraging your natural strengths. "Never underestimate your
strengths."
Paul says that very
often the skills that we use every day, that come to us so easily, are the ones
that we almost take for granted. Because they really are no effort for us we
run the risk of not leveraging them as much as we should. Others see those
unique skills much more clearly and because they are only exposed to them once
in a while they place a much greater value on them than we do ourselves.
I agree with Paul adamantly, "Do not underestimate your key skills.
Identify them, appreciate them and make them work for you every day in every
interaction."
Be clear on what you do best and do it!
