The Right Frame

Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.

A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend and I went to Comic-Com in San Diego. I was a first-timer, and a little overwhelmed by its sheer magnitude and boiling energy. As we were swinging through the aisles of booths, a painting caught my attention. It was an illustration of a “centaur,” a mythological creature that is half human and half horse. Somehow, out of all the millions of impressions, it jumped out and spoke to me at that moment.

So I took it home, a beautiful piece of art for only $15. The next day I went to the framing store thinking I’d pick up a simple, inexpensive frame to go with the painting. I enlisted the store associate to help me. We brought various frames to compare. They all looked okay, but nothing really stood out. Finally, I heard his excited voice, “This one would be perfect for it!” He brought over a beautiful frame, light blue with organic yellow tones on it. When he put it down by the painting, all of the sudden the image came alive. It was indeed perfect. Then he suggested a pinkish mat to accentuate the color hues of the painting.

Voilà! There it was. Spectacular! I was astonished. And, of course, I was even more astonished when he told me the price – over $200. What I really loved and connected with was the painting, which cost only $15. But the frame and mat cost more than 10 times that! Interesting...

You know me by now: I couldn’t help thinking... Isn’t this also true about how we say and see things? How we frame our message makes a big difference. Depending on the frame, we can enhance the beauty of our message or diminish it. We can make it come alive or fall flat. There is indeed a perfect frame for everything – if we are patient and thoughtful enough to find it.

How would you frame your message?
