Determining what is You, Inc. and How to Market it

In this article I will help the non-sales oriented with basic sales and marketing

concepts. In order to determine your direction, you must be certain of you the vessel.

Then you can begin to establish the goal and path to it.

Here is a comparison that should help the non sales oriented to understand a very often

misunderstood term- Marketing.

Marketing is to sales, as law is to policeman.

That is to say that marketing is an organized outline of behaviors and principals which

are applied in a sales process. Just like our society is organized around right and wrong

laws and law enforcement is applying those laws to keep order.

You need to organize your product or service. Let’s call the product "YOU, INC."

It is the principle of marketing that defines features and benefits (What is the

product?), sets price and establishes those for appropriate audiences (Where should it

be sold). Marketing is the what + where, “sales” is the messenger.

How does this apply to "YOU,INC", the new entrepreneur? A successful entrepreneur

understands the product objectively and the principles for positioning that product in

the marketplace. It is here that the “what” is established for later use in the “where”

analysis for establishing selling activity focus.

Don’t fall into the trap of confusing marketing with sales. It is very important to

understand the “what” part first. Tough as is seems, "YOU, INC." must be subjectively

and objectively subjected to product analysis. This is the beginning of establishing

exactly what "YOU, INC." is.

There are very good tools for determining what "YOU, INC." is. I suggest beginning

with personality. Establishing whether you are venturesome, logical, repetitive or inquisitive,

to name only a few traits, will help set values for "YOU, INC."

Where you have been and where you wish to go with "YOU, INC." should now be

established in your mind. The marketing plan now evolves into action steps.

Be advised that the plan is fluid and can be modified at anytime should situations

change. Facts will alter the focus. Trends may have been misread. Potential may have

been of no interest to the market.

Market research must included details of potential buyers. Facts about these buyers are

central to customizing presentations. Addressing issues common to one group will

simply waste the time of another. Decision making is a fast process; rejections come

quickly in the pace of the internet.

Selection of the competitive advantages "YOU, INC." has in the market place will vary

with each targeted buyer. This is packaging. Every packaging project is different as the

buyer’s point of view must be recognized.

Sales Communication is the art of telling specifics about "YOU, INC." that are of interest to the potential buyer and convincing

them you are the best that can be found. It is natural to focus telling large number of potential buyers about "YOU, INC."

Networking with personal contacts, a friend refers you to a friend of a friend, you now

have a warm contact. Cold calls have had a place too in marketing. That was then,

years ago before the advent of the internet.

Today, now, the successful marketing approach is to sell "YOU, INC." That’s why we

spent so much time in discovery of who you are, what you need and want, what you

stand for…your value!

By now I suspect this all has built to a confusing state. Take away one point, do some

deep thinking focused on what you want.

This suggestion may not be for you, but it does deserve a look. I have discovered an

educational firm that can lead you through a deeper discovery of "YOU, INC." and help you learn how to bring customers to you

what ever your endeavor.

I have arranged a tour for you. Be aware, however, there is a membership application and you may not be offered membership. They will not waste your time, or theirs.

Best of Luck,

Dave Mathis

Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? - ignore this message IF it's already been stated. I haven't had a chance to read all the replies and i have to jet from the office... I suggest marketing where ever your Target Market congregates. If it's a forum of concerned parents - go there. Strike up a deal with the forum owner (JV) and have him promote it to the list of members (Integration Marketing). If you want to go with Forums then i would partner with a parent who is a frequent poster/moderator on a particular Target Market Forum and have him/her add your link to their signature. That was just a thought but it's not as intense once you get buy in from the Forum owner or high ranked poster/moderator. Hope that sparks some new ideas.
