Fighting the Internet “Black Hole” In Your Job Search It is easy to apply, easy to be ignored. The Internet is Good and Bad. Use it, not have it use you.

The job hunt got immensely easier with the advent of the internet. It is very simple to apply for nearly every opening, shoot a resume to target firms and present your credentials to recruiting professionals. It is also immensely easy to be ignored, lost in the tide of applicants or stored in archive.

To be rejected is hard enough when the letter or email arrives. Well, now you have to get used to hearing nothing. Did the individual get the résumé? What did they think of you? Feedback would help refine your qualifications. Don’t expect any.

Let’s take the employer point of view and try to improve our chances. Many hiring decision makers, recruiters and their representatives do set up automated response systems. The internet has made it so easy that large numbers of unqualified people cover every remotely matching and some ridiculous non-match employers. This is a huge investment of time for the employer.

It has been reported that applications are up by 95% over 2009. This is driven by the rising volume of unemployed people and the ease of sending very large numbers of people information. Think how you respond to spam. The response is, “it depends”.

The firm may not be hiring, they could be shrinking. They might be holding on by a thread. Could it be the firm is mature and in need of fresh talent? A possibility is the target company is in a true pocket of economic growth and Hungary for new folks. There are active corporate ploys to make it harder. Which is it?

Here you are with a fantastic set of credentials and you are in a tsunami tide of other applicants. Time for the tried and true skills of the most successful job candidates: take control of your campaign.

You have your list of targeted employers. Now what?

Here’s how: Work Hard, use the internet and the power of sleuthing

· Find an inside contact who can be your advocate. Where?

· Use the internet tools of Linkedin, Plaxo, and the many other business social networks. Post a request for a contact. Ask to forward application to the right person.

· Friends and relatives, FaceBook, MySpace and Twitter

· Go to the firm’s web page, About Us or Contact Us often list names, go for the leaders of appropriate departments

· Browse the company for news articles, business stories honors recipients, recently advanced staff.

· Call the firm and ask who is in charge of hiring efforts

Contact. How?

· Don’t ask people who do not know you to vouch for you, waste of your time and theirs

· Resend your information to the hiring manager, restate interest and qualifications

· Mentioning an employee referral is a good move, could be another over loaded pathway though

· Remember the telephone? Use it knowing it can back fire or be a qualifier showing just how serious a candidate is and get the resume pulled from archive

§ Ask whether you can take any further recommended steps

§ Do as recommended

§ Do not call back unless directed, you’re a pest

· Even with your best efforts you may not hear anything, get over it and move on

· You have heard it before and it remains very true; people you know are great sources for contacts. Expand your professional relationships. Volunteer, show up to meetings and be seen.

Work Hard. Finding a job is a full time job, you have heard that over and over again. There are many different approaches all working for you at the same time. Use the social networking systems, job listing boards, association volunteering and every option you can gather.

Do not cease until you have a firm offer, preferably written. Much more information at my site listed in my Bio under career management.

The Alternative

Turnabout is fair play. You could choose to employ the internet and begin a new business on-line. Scary thought? Under the right situation you might be on to something here.

Just about everyone gets those get rich quick ads in their email box. Makes you very jaded, right? The internet is like the old Wild West, loads of bad guys. There are a few Marshal Dillon’s, too. Even the Law lawmen need honest deputies to help with weed control.

What is needed is a trusted friend. If you know someone who is in eCommerce you are very lucky. Hopefully you have someone who can show you the ropes and not get angry with you because you are a “newbie”.

I have discovered an educational company that is unique on the subject of internet entrepreneur training. I have found them to be very gentile with newbie’s and they represent an entire community of successful web professionals willing to help the individual with web marketing instruction for every level of experience .

Refer to the small business insight web address in my Bio for more internet entrepreneur information.

Best of Luck!
