Want To Get Into Google Quick? – Here’s The Wrong Way To Do It
Without doubt getting into Google – or the other major search engines is a major goal of most new web sites. Search engine traffic is more targeted and less expensive to maintain. Unfortunately new web site owners are often new at internet marketing and prone to falling for scams and just plainly doing things the wrong way. Here are a few things NOT to do.
* Believing the impossible: Run don’t walk away from any company that guarantees a front page listing for your web site. Even Google cannot do this. There are only two ways to get this 1)Pay per click advertising – which is ludicrously expensive or 2)Your listing will be for an extremely obscure keyword phrase of maybe seven or eight words which is unlikely to bring you any traffic. Of course the “SEO” company has charged you a lot of money for this “service”.
* Spamming the Search Engines: Usually by multiple software submissions. Whilst one submission is often not enough for the small and medium sized search engines, the larger ones may ban you for spamming them. Many of the search engines know the various submission software packages and automatically ignore them. Hand submission is always best and the popularity of the search engines means that they may take some time to respond to your request – so patience. Conventional wisdom states that it can take a new site up to six months to be spidered by the major search engines. DMOZ is even longer.
* Keyword stuffing: By putting the same few keywords continually on your web site and in your meta tags. Use your keywords naturally.
* Hidden or Inappropriate Text: Search engines work by scanning pages for certain keywords which are submitted into a search request and then display the results for the searcher. Don’t be tempted to hide these keywords by using the same color text and background. Similarly don’t put keywords on your web site that are not appropriate to the site. In particular do not stuff your site with competitor names and slogans. This will probably get you banned.
* Doorway Pages: This concept is still sold by some less than scrupulous SEO companies, even though the major search engines banned them a long time ago. A doorway page is a page with little content on it, especially constructed to attract search engines. They are now banned because they offer very little to the visitor.
* Link farms: These are web sites that are put up to only include links. They typically have a considerable number of links – often in the hundreds – and very little content. These links are of no use whatsoever to your web site and in some cases can be detrimental to your search engine listings. When you get asked for a link always check the site asking for the link.
Search engines are very sophisticated now a days and the algorithms they use are constantly changing and always secret. They know these tricks and using them runs the risk of your web site being banned!
