Want Your Linking Campaign To Be Effective And Painless?

Most people now know that you need links to your web site in order for it to be well placed in the search engines, but it is such hard work to get even a few links. There must be a more successful way surely?

Yes there are, but first of all you need to make sure that your site is ready to accept links and be indexed by the search engines. To do this you must:

• SEO (Search Engine Optimize) your site so that it has good keywords, great content and is easy to navigate as well as being attractive to potential visitors and customers.
• Put a “links” or “resources” page on your site and put a few links on it already. This makes you look as if you have some links already. You should also put links to your own sites here.
• Put a “link to me” page on your site and outline your linking criteria as well as the details that you want any linking site to use. Use two or three options including a graphic and an anchored link (one where keywords are linked to your web site). This helps your potential linkers.
• Put an “about us” page on your site that has your contact details and a bit about your company. This makes your site real and helps both your surfers and your potential linkers to contact you.
• Start marketing your site so that it has some visitors and becomes established. No one wants to link to a starter site where they will have little chance of their site link being seen.

Some people like to collect links because they think they should and it helps. Lots of poor links has the opposite effect. You should ONLY link with sites where you both benefit. You will find that, once your site gets established, that you get offered some really appalling linking requests. Being asked to give a link to a good site in exchange for a link to a third rate search engine or link farm is going to be very common. Care about your links – the major search engines put a great deal of emphasis on the quality of your links.

Now start a linking campaign with other sites, whose content compliments your site. Write a nice email to each site saying that you have visited their site, mention something you have seen on the site so that they know you have, and introduce your service. Also ask them for a link and point out the benefits to both of you. State that this is a one time request only and that you do not wish to spam them. The whole email should be about 200 words long at the most and preferably about 150 words. This works, if you target your requests correctly, far better than random volumes of link requests.

If you get a reply, and you may not do so, then politely deal with it immediately and put up their link. Tell them where to find the link and send them your linking details – or point the to your “link to us” page. Ask them to let you know when the link is live – but many do not reply.

Check that they have linked after 7 - 10 days. If it is not live, drop a friendly email to remind them and if this does not work, consider taking down their link from your site.

If you spend some time each month on this activity, you will start to get your web site noticed and also some great links. Good luck.
