You’ve Got Your New Online Business – So How Can You Ruin It?
Every week thousands of people start their new online business and every week many of them fail. So what can we learn from these failures? Well here’s how to ensure that you ruin your new business.
1. Use No Cost Hosting
Sounds a great idea. Put your site up at no cost. Use the web space that comes with your internet account or from a big supplier. Not going to work I am afraid. This kind of hosting is instantly recognizable – not least because of the advertising that you have endure but also because of the long and strange web site address that you have to use. You are also given a giveaway email address - just to advertise that you are not really a professional outfit. No cost hosting from large companies provides minimal support and facilities and is offered to encourage upgrading. Remember this please.
2. Buy a Cheap Site of the Auction Sites
If you follow these auctions over a number of weeks you will see that the same types of sites come up for sale again and again. How are you going to profit amongst such competition? Never believe the sales pitch of making so much for so little effort and money. Better to spend some time, effort and money on making your site unique and pleasant to visit.
3. Forget Your Site
Think of your site as your baby – it needs constant attention and changing. You need to regularly add and change your content, market it and improve it. This encourages both search engine rankings and repeat visits as well as that all important purchaser.
4. Hide From Your Customers
You can do this by not putting any contact details on your website, offering no support and using an obscure payment processor. People like to know they can find you if something goes wrong, their credit card details are safe and that you are a real person and not a scam!
5. Don’t Tell Anyone About Your Business
There are billions of web sites around and even more products for sale. So how do you expect anyone to find you? Marketing, list building and advertising. That’s how. Business failures happen because you don’t sell enough to survive. Expect to spend about 75% of your time marketing at the beginning of your business life and then about 50% once you are established.
