A Dirty Little 4-Letter Word: MOLD
Let’s talk about that 4-letter word MOLD. Mold is not only
unsightly, but can trigger allergic conditions and a host of other
problems when found living inside a home. The truth is that it can be
found in or out of doors year round.
Mold growth is encouraged by warm and humid conditions. If you find
it outdoors, it is likely in shady, damp areas where leaves or other
vegetation in decomposing. Indoors molds can be found where humidity
levels are high, such as basements or showers.
Not everyone is sensitive to molds. For those who are, exposure can
cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, skin irritation, wheezing, or
eye irritation. For those who suffer from allergies, the reactions may
be more severe. For example, farmers who work around moldy hay all day
are more likely to suffer from fever or shortness of breath than those
not exposed all day in occupational settings. Nevertheless, anyone with
chronic respiratory illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may
develop mold infections in their lungs.
The Institute of Medicine discovered sufficient evidence in 2004
linking indoor mold exposure with upper respiratory tract symptoms,
cough, and wheezing in otherwise healthy people. Those with asthma were
more susceptible to all of the above.
What can the real estate investment home business person do to
squelch the plague of mold? The following suggestions are what I teach
in my real estate investing mentorship program:
- Fill a Hudson Sprayer with a solution of 1 cup household bleach to 1 gallon of water.
- Open nearby windows and doors for ventilation.
- Wear protective eyewear and rubber gloves.
- Carefully follow manufacturer’s directions and never mix with any detergents.
- Once done spraying, rinse all treated areas with clean water.
That concludes this tip on molds. Stay tuned for more methods of dealing with this pesky 4-letter word.
