Plan Your Blog for Success

As a solo entrepreneur, it is especially important that you have a plan for your business, including your blog. The key to having a successful blog as a business owner is keeping your goals clear and concrete at every step of the way. Believe me, I know how easy it is to get sidetracked by new trinkets for your blogging technology. But if you want your practice, your business and your blog to succeed you need to stay focused.

It is a good idea to have a “blogging plan” written down somewhere. Here are some things you should include in this plan.

* How often will you post to your blog? Daily? Weekly? On specific days of the week? Make sure your plan fits the needs of your prospects. How often would they be likely to visit and read your posts? Also, keep in mind that you want to stick to a regular schedule. Once your readers know that you update frequently, they will return to your site on a regular basis.

* How will you promote your blog? Too many bloggers spend all of their time writing posts and next to no time marketing the site, so this is a key component of your plan. There are so many ways to do this both passively and actively, that I can’t really list them here. But this is definitely something that should be a part of your plan.

* What kind of content will your blog feature? What topic will your content cover? What style of delivery will you use? Will your posts include photographs? Clipart? Video?

* What results do you want to achieve with your blog? Do you want to grow an RSS subscription list? What about an opt-in list? Do you want to grow both?

* How will you measure your results? Will you measure visitor statistics? Quantity of comments posted? Opt-in subscriber growth? Incoming links? Something else?

While you are creating your plan, you can dream big but also be realistic in the time lines you set for your goals. Many solo entrepreneurs who are new to blogging, have unrealistic expectations of how fast their readership will grow and how much of an increase in profit blogging will bring them. When these unrealistic expectations aren’t met, they stop blogging … often just before they’ve reached critical mass and were at the edge of success!

So create your short- and long-term plans — and stick to them!

Business Innovation Business Innovation - Hi Simon If you can finish off the Business Plan and think about your strategic direction or how you are going to use your product to convince people it's a great idea, it will set the foundation for your programming project. You see, when you are looking for funding you will need a Business Plan and Strategic Plan that will convince companies to invest into your new idea. Has anyone achieved this idea before using another industry besides health and fitness that you know of? You should also design some mockups as a "preview" for your programming project. This will also help reduce your programming costs as everyone will know exactly what you want if you have detailed mockups already completed including any functionality you require. Starting mockups for websites and software applications on paper is the best way if you're not a guru in graphic editing software.
Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy - Hi David, I agree about the Blogosphere. You have a smaller group that Blog, but do so on the premise that they think they should, but have never really considered the purpose of their Blog. Then I think there are a few SEO or Internet Marketing types that see Blogging as just another link building strategy. But the largest group of Bloggers, tend to be people who enjoy writing and discussing their topics of interest. Blogging is good for link building, but the true Blogger is a breed apart from the rest. They want to dialog, to debate, to have feedback and they are very willing to link to other worthwhile conversations that are relevant to their topic. I agree with you. These group of Bloggers obviously are passionate about their writing and together, they create huge conversation trails interactive and travel from Blog to Blog. But the evidence is clear with this group that loves what they write about. With comments enabled on a Blog and having a Blog tuned to a specific purpose you already have the evidence of original Social Media.

EvanCarmichael.com suggestion EvanCarmichael.com suggestion - Maybe I missed it but I would like to suggest that a Blog be created to support the Forum. The idea is that in the blog you put in snippets of some of the biggest conversations with a 'read more' link to the forum itself. Setting up the Blog and clipping some conversations onto it wouldn't take very long.
Jen's Blog - Spam protection Jen's Blog - Spam protection - Jen, I like the Blog and just posted a comment to one of your articles. From my experience you need to implement some sort of SPAM capture tools. i use them on my Blog and it's been a life saver as I'm getting hit by spam atleast 5 times a day. I use Wordpress and they have plugins like Captcha and SPAM Karma installed.
