Check Domain Name Availability.
When you are starting a business you might also will think about having a website through which you could advertise your products and/or services. In order to have a web site, you will have to register a domain name (a name through which your website will be viewable via the internet). You can let a web design/e-commerce company take care of that, or you could also check whether the name you would wish to register is available and register it yourself. There are many registries to choose from. The main ones I recommend would be www.godaddy.com and www.sibername.com (where you can also register .ca – Canadian accounts). Both are inexpensive and reliable.
It is simpler to let the web designer take care of this step. However, to make sure that you won’t end up running into problems by someone overcharging you or simply not giving you access to your domain name, you might be saving a lot of headaches on the long run if you do this on your own. Web designers might or might not be around. If they don’t give you access to your domain name control area, basically they can do whatever they want with it. If they get mad at you for some reason, they can simply change the information (domain name) to point to your competitor. They can even sell your domain name. So you are really at the mercy of someone else if you let that other person handle your domain name or if you don’t ask for at least the login access information. If the web designer gives you access to this information, make sure you are the one that has the administrative privileges of the domain name. Only administrators can make major changes on the settings. You want to make sure you will be the one who has that right.
Beside having a domain name you will also have to have a hosting service for your website. The services of storing your site files and allowing it to be viewed online is the service called hosting. Be careful with companies that charge you very little. That will most probably be equal to bad service, or no service at all. Your website will be an extra source of online advertisement tool for you. Make sure you pick the right company to host it so that your site will be up and running 24/7 with no downtimes. For making sure that you can sleep all right at night, you might wish to register with http://www.freewebmonitoring.com/, which provides web site monitoring service and will alert you if your site is down.
And last but not least, if anyone who has access to your information (domain name & hosting) leaves your company, make sure to change passwords. You are better off not having any bad surprises from former employees or “trusted friends” when it comes to your web site.
