When it Comes to Your Health, Accurate Personal Health Care Records Are Key

Written by: Robert Pothier

Article Overview: Not too long ago, it seemed that personal health care records were something akin to closely-guarded state secrets—getting your hands on even your own information seemed to take an act of Congress and a dispensation of form from the high Pontiff himself. Then along came the internet, and with it, the democratization of information. Now, riding herd on your health care information isn’t so much an issue of access, but one of data liquidity, or ensuring not only that your data is accurate, but expressed in a form that can be digested by you and your health care providers alike.

When it Comes to Your Health, Accurate Personal Health Care Records Are Key

Not too long ago, it seemed that personal health care records were something akin to closely-guarded state secrets—getting your hands on even your own information seemed to take an act of Congress and a dispensation of form from the high Pontiff himself. Then along came the internet, and with it, the democratization of information. Now, riding herd on your health care information isn’t so much an issue of access, but one of data liquidity, or ensuring not only that your data is accurate, but expressed in a form that can be digested by you and your health care providers alike.

For example, if you’ve grown weary of filling out those ubiquitous forms each and every time you visit a doctor, you can use a service like NoMoreClipboard.com. Billed as a secure medical “vault” for your important medical records—as well as your kids’ medical records, or the records of anyone (an elderly parent, say) whose health is your responsibility—you can log in and create an account to store all the information you care to enter. That way, the information is there for you to access at any time, and when it comes time for you, or anyone in your charge, to see a doctor, NoMoreClipboard.com will shoot that information over to the doctor for you—for free. And for a fee, NoMoreClipboard.com will even distill that information into the type of form specifically used by your doctor. NoMoreClipboard.com’s database includes every physician recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA). Want more? NoMoreClipboard.com even integrates with Google Health.

About Google Health . . .

Launched in May 2008 as a beta product, Google Health is an opt-in personal health information centralization service that allows users to enter health information about themselves and create a Google Health “profile”—a merged health record that can be consumed by users and health care providers alike. Not only does it allow users to create health records by entering information manually, it allows users to create health records automatically from existing sources. If you’re a member Cleveland Clinic, for example, or if you get your prescription drugs from CVS or Walgreens, you can import information from those sources directly into your Google Health profile.

But be forewarned: the democratization of medical information may be a great leap forward for health care, but it comes with its responsibilities. And those responsibilities fall heaviest on the person who relies on the data the most: the patient.

In April, the Boston Globe painted a vivid picture of what could go wrong when it told the story of Dave deBronkart, a cancer survivor who decided to create a Google Health profile with information he obtained from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. After importing the information into his Google Health profile, deBronkart was surprised to learn some things he never knew about his cancer: that it had spread to either his brain or his spine, or that he may have had chronic lung disease and an aortic aneurism—or that his blood pressure medication required immediate attention.

The issue? Some of deBronkart’s information was drawn from billing records rather than health records themselves.

Billing records are already computerized, and as a result, they’re easy to download, upload, and transfer. However, they are prone to inaccuracies for several reasons, among them the codes required by insurers, and the notion that sometimes doctors label diagnostic tests with the names of diseases they hope to rule out—not diseases the patient actually has.

“Claims data is notoriously inaccurate and notoriously incomplete with respect to an expression of the problems a person has,” said Dr. David Kibbe, a senior technology advisor to the American Academy of Family Physicians, as quoted by the Boston Globe. As a result, accuracy is often lost in translation. In deBronkart’s case, for example, his cancer had spread to his skull, but there is no code for that, so instead, the hospital probably used the code to indicate metastases to his brain or his spine, according to Dr. Daniel Sands, deBronkart’s primary care physician and the director of medical informatics at Cisco Systems, as quoted by the Globe.

Dr. Roni Zeiger, a product manager for Google Health, noted that he is aware of the issue and is sure that Google Health will improve over time. According to Zeiger, as quoted by the Globe, doctors need to evaluate information based on where it comes from and calibrate treatment decisions accordingly—which they often have to do with paper records anyway.

Until all the bugs are worked out of the system, it’s vital that the end user—patients and those responsible for other peoples’ health care—ride herd on their health care data. On Google Health, people who discover mistakes can delete information, add notes, or ask health care providers to correct problems. Potential e-patients can learn more about managing their health care information online at e-patients.net.

Re: Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? Re: Are Economic Recessions Good for Franchising? - All we can do is remain wide awake and pay attention to the ebb and flow. My strategy is to be prepared and go with the flow. There could be some rough times ahead... Interestingly, our business has remained strong. I believe it's because we're in such a tight little niche and we're well positioned to sign jobs nationwide, therefore we're not restricted to location. We also target affluent markets that have higher disposable incomes - this we do locally. Here are some Franchise Categories that could weather a good recession... Health and Personal Care Food services like Subway Debt Collection Tax Preparers & Advisors Any other recession proof franchise opps out there?
Wills, Power of Attorneys personal, bank, health Wills, Power of Attorneys personal, bank, health - These four items are important even if you don't have a business. You don't have to have a Will because the law has procedures that are in place just incase someone dies without a Will. It is call dieing intestate. However, it can be an expensive process for your beneficiaries and your estate may not go to who you want it to go to. A Will - helps you set up where you want your assets to go to and who they go to. They set out your wishes for the business as well. In Ontario, you do not have to have a Will prepared by a lawyer but sometimes it is in your best interest to do so. There is a lot of info on the internet and kits that are available but they key to this are the witnesses to your signature. You may want to write it yourself and then have a lawyer witness the signing of the Will. If you handwrite you’re Will then you don't need to have it witnessed. But the entire document must be in your handwriting no typing allowed. The Power of Attorneys - Personal or Health Personal - This gives someone consent to act on your behalf if you can't due to physical or mental disabilities. The Power of Attorney goes into effect only when you are incapacitated or you authorize it. So it can be signed and ready to be used but only takes effect when you are ready to use it. You don't need a lawyer to prepare these - there are kits on the internet, there are kits that the government have where you can fill in the blanks. But if you have an extensive estate I would take it to the lawyer because their could be other issues that need to be dealt with. Health – This Power of Attorney outlines what you want to happen in case of medical emergency, for example, do you want to be revived if there is no hope of recovery, is the most common reason, maybe the type of treatment that you want to receive for the particular illness you have. This Power of Attorney protects your health rights when you can't speak for yourself and it gives someone else the right to speak for you. In the Power of Attorney you would outline your request and designate someone to carry them out. Bank - This one designates someone to look after your finances if you aren't able to do them. The banks have special procedures and these forms are completed at the bank. So if you became ill then your designated person can take care of your finances until you are ready to resume doing them. The Power of Attorneys and the Wills are legal documents and they can be revoked or changed at any time. If your estate is very large then I would suggest that you have a lawyer prepare these documents to protect your interest. Again, the law does not have the same rules as a married spouse so this would protect the surviving partner in a common-law relationship. I realize that most of the subjects that are discussed on this site are concerning growing your business but I deal with the hidden aspect of the business as well and these could affect your business as much as if you can't find that next client. Happy and Prosperous New Year Everyone
Best incentive to offer employees Best incentive to offer employees - What's the best incentive to offer employees? Is it more health benefits? More vacation? Health club memberships? Paying for training? Cash / non-cash bonuses & rewards? I'm preparing a new package for my company and would love to get your thoughts! Thank you in advance!
list building list building - OK.... I think I get it. Reason I'm curious is that I'm working on a Health product site with a friend, it will fit nicely with the client base on arcamax. We're planning to set up an affiliate program to drive sales and looking for low cost alternatives to generate traffic. We will be creating several reports, and a book is already available. We just need to get the puzzle pieces in place for the site - then get the traffic.
Re: Let Your Employees Nap At Work Re: Let Your Employees Nap At Work - Hi Evan, Thanks for the post, it makes interesting reading and I must admit a power nap in the afternoon seems very appealing. I know in some countries particularly Spain they have a siesta and close up the shops for a couple of hours then re-open again in the late afternoon, not sure I could do that,LOL There has been some interest in the UK for 'quiet rooms' in some industries but that relates more to Health and Safety and dealing with stress at work by chilling out for a short period but not much has really come of it and certainly not allocated nap times but I like the idea. I think as one comment on the post pointed out, this is a great side benefit of working from home, you can allocate your own nap time. regards, Mal.
