Taking the first step – “Connecting business with Social Media” - By Brian Beehler

Just wanted to post something short and sweet today. I’m still a little perturbed about my meeting at work on Tuesday, so I decided to post some opportunities the new Facebook layout proposes for businesses. My theory is that if I can potentially present sound principles that shift traditional thinking it may become easier to sway the skeptics.

I came across several people blogging on this particular subject so some of my ideas are blended with some of the ones I found. I would really like to hear some of your thoughts of the new Facebook layout and features from a business perspective. Here are several that I feel stand out:

1. It offers stronger interaction with potential or existing customers.
Now that the new layout is focused on the wall tabs, pages will become active and dynamic, thus encouraging more interaction and participation.
2. Facebook has now increased its already superior viral capabilities.
Content that is posted within the wall of your business page will also show up on the fans’ news feeds more often. Ultimately, posting updates more frequently will increase your overall traffic, making it a true viral machine.
3. It offers more ways for you to communicate
The Status Update will provide a powerful way to share short interesting blurbs with potential or existing customers in a way that is less obtrusive than an update delivered as a notification or a message.
4. Targeted landing page for potential and existing customers.

As the admin of your business page you’ll be able to set the default tab that would be most appealing or interactive to visitors. This will allow you to better promote different portions of your page. By driving traffic to landing pages within Facebook, you can dramatically build connections and relationships.

I have started to hear some rumblings about Facebook Connect. In the next week or so I will be learning more about the new platform through a direct contact from Facebook. Hopefully I can add further insight on how Facebook could be used as a Social Media tool for businesses in the weeks to come. Stay Tuned!
