The importance of search in business

Search is now the preserve of Google - so much so that searching is referred to as Googling in many walks of life.

However searching is such a vast area, so important and yet we pigeon hole it into a few small bands.

Obviously you have the typical search engines: the aforementioned all conquering Google, but also Bing, Yahoo!, and the like.

But then if you cast your mind wider to where search is and what search does, would Amazon even have a business if they didn't have search on their site?

Twitter would just be you, sitting on your own writing short messages to nobody in particular.

You'd have a grand total of 20 Facebook friends and none of them would be 'blasts from the past'.

In the office you'd spend hours and hours a day wasted looking through things one by one... actually hold that thought. Searching for saving time

In fact, that's quite an important issue. While search is so integrated into all elements of our day-to-day lives, it's amazing how little we take advantage of this technology in our working lives and it could make our lives so much simpler and much more productive.

Take document management for example. Not the technology, the concept. When you have a pile of documents, you have to go through them one by one, unless you've filed them. There's no quick way of indexing. Even on computers, you'll put documents here, documents there and you'll keep your emails all safely filed in your inbox. Just think though, how inefficient is that?

So we then put them in folders. Then we lose them. Then we recreate and stick them in another folder... the cycle goes on and on.

Then when we do standardise a little we start to enhance the file name to make it more useful resulting in:

* Proposal for AcMe Inc.doc

* Proposal for AcMe Inc v2.doc

* Proposal for AcMe Inc Janes v1.doc

* Proposal for AcMe Inc Jane v2 include v2.doc etc

The content will be similar, and the search will probably yield all three documents. Suddenly you haven't a clue which version to use, even if you have found the document. Which highlights the importance of versioning and making sure that the latest version is managed in a workflow and you only ever find the real document you are looking for.

I struggle to understand why, when there are so many ways to file, store, search and manage documents, that there are any businesses or employees still wasting valuable time making life difficult for themselves.

What can you do?

Search is so important inside your business and there are definitely places you can go to improve how you find things, it will always depend on your budget though. If you want to spend big then you can look at Interwoven who have some really smart technology. For mid to small budgets there are many organisations out there including Google Docs (or you can integrate a Google search), Glasscubes or if you have no money whatsoever, why not check out OpenDocMan although you may need a little technical expertise to really get the most out of it.

In my opinion and many others, it's time to change the tune. We're not searching anymore. We're finding.

Re: Quick Ways To Utilize SEO Effectively Re: Quick Ways To Utilize SEO Effectively - 1. If you dont want too much competition from other SEO's, choose your keywords precisely. For example, Instead of keyword Loan choose keywords like Bank Loan, Equity Loan, Student Loan, Home Loan etc. Order of keyword also matter for search engines. Search engine treats ?Loan Equity? and ?Equity Loan? as different keywords. 2. Best seo practice is to get at least one of your primary keywords in domain or sub domain name of your website. You can use hyphens (-) to separate multiple keywords. For example: seo-service, seo-guidelines, free-seo each cover two keywords. 3. Get your second or third keywords in your directory name and filename. 4. Keep your webpage free from any syntax error, declare document type at the beginning and validate your HTML and CSS because search engine don?t like pages with too many errors. 5. Give a short Title in of your page in 3-9 words (60-80 characters) maximum in length containing your primary keyword. Remember it will be displayed in search results so choose wisely. 6. Try to include your most important keyword phrases in heading tags on your page if you can but keep in mind it should not be exactly same as title of your page. You can use (H1 H2 H3) tag for specifying anything important. To reduce size of heading use CSS. 7. Specify Meta keywords in heading of document. Limit it to 15 to 20 words. Although not all the search engines give importance but there is no harm doing it. Search engine like Yahoo still give it importance. 8. Write Your Meta Description tag attractive containing keywords because it will appear on the search engine result pages. 9. Use text for navigation menu instead of using images or Java scripts. 10. Try to include your most important keyword in hyper linked text and text and text that immediately precedes or follows the hyperlink. Do not use same keyword always use synonyms at few places. Just like instead of seo, I have use search engine optimization at many places on this page.
Re: Specific Strategies To Raise PR Levels? Re: Specific Strategies To Raise PR Levels? - After re-reading through the posts in this thread it seems to me like there might be a little confusion as to what Page Rank (PR) really is. For those who don't know... PR is a number between 1 and 10 that Google assigns to a web page based on it's importance. With 10 being the highest and most important. It's mainly determined by the number and quality of inbound links to the web page but there are other factors as well. It is NOT the ranking your site has in the Google search engine or any other search engine. If you are ranked #3 on google for "home business" that does not mean you have a PR of 3. They are completely separate things. Furthermore, PR does not determine how high a site ranks in the search engines. It's possible and very common for a site with a low PR to outrank and site with a higher PR for the same keyword phrase. If you want to raise your PR then you need more backlinks. Higher PR backlinks will pass more link juice to you and help raise it much easier. On that same note, if you want to increase your search engine rankings for a particular keyword then you also need more backlinks with the keyword you are targeting as the anchor text. When it comes to that, Page Rank and Search Engine Ranking Positions are very similar but that is it. People often think that they need high PR to get good search engine rankings and it is not true. They also tend to think that just because a site has high PR then it is better than a site with lower PR, that is also not always the case. One final thing about this is that the PR you see on your Google Toolbar for a web page only updates a few times per year and is not necessarily the actual PR for that page. The actual PR is stored at Google and is updated constanty, and is not shown to the public. Only they know what it really is. I hope that clears up some common misconceptions about Google Page Rank (PR).
Re: Search Engine Optimization Re: Search Engine Optimization - As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual search terms typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.
Re: SEO... Re: SEO... - Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of civilizing the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical searchengines. This gives a web site web presence.
Proper Planning required Proper Planning required - Paper business has its own importance. But it has to be done in the right way. You have to plan in a proper way. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. You have to check your priority.
