Article Overview: When it comes to startups it is important that you have a killer idea to get the word going. Now, you just can't spring up and yell I can create a device that will take you to Andromeda and vanish. It might trigger a few enthusiasts but your disappearance and no methodology to put this to practice would have people call you stupid. Seriously, you don't have to doubt that at all. When it comes to startups it is important that you have a killer idea to get the word going. Now, you just can't spring up and yell I can create a device that will take you to Andromeda and vanish. It might trigger a few enthusiasts but your disappearance and no methodology to put this to practice would have people call you stupid. Seriously, you don't have to doubt that at all. I have many ideas to talk about, many that can be implemented and yet putting them to practice can be difficult for many reasons and the major one is a business model. Somehow I just can't a way to justify that, I know it will have user demand, I know it users translate to revenue but just say business model and boom! I am out.
That's the story of past, until my recent visit to Finland to attend Mindtrek back in 2009. Meeting all the people, entrepreneurs, startups and being exposed to ideas making big transformed me and I figured out my flaw: there can't be singularity with innovation. A dream is individual but its implementation, requires a dedicated team. So does that mean I had no team building in me? I wont say that, because it is untrue, the issue is simple and dead straight, I couldn't get the idea out in a manner that others who I collaborate with, would develop a clear understanding of any idea. It is imperative that you share and share very clearly; your objectives, the methodologies, the expertise of each individual in your team and more importantly how to apply them in the right direction and path. That is why I am always up and loud on having anyone share ideas with those who have had one in their lives and turned it into success.
There are many places you can do that, find online forums, startup blogs, your universities and attending conferences that have investors, startups, entrepreneurs coming under one roof. You know you are not going to provide a pitch, it's not important, just pack your bag and make a trip, especially if it is in your town, that time and money is your primary investment and honestly speaking the most important one. Investors look beyond startups that provide a pitch, they have all the time on these conferences to give an ear to an interesting idea and if yours is good enough a minute is more than enough for you. Prepare solid pointers and Unique Selling Points of your project, highlight what you think would make money and why it can be profitable put it on the table. You might very well not get funding there and then, but a visiting card [contact] is surely in your pocket and the person you talk to would remember you. That is the key, take the chance, you have nothing to lose if you are a beginner.
Sadly we all know that and yet we fail to follow. Victims of constraints and habitual excusing attitude is all you see [ I am strictly focused on Pakistan right now]. There are complains on Unavailability of opportunities and blaming the system, everyone says they have an idea, but you never really hear of it. I was at a session at a local University recently and that is what I got from many students, they wait for an opportunity to come when the whole world is trying to create those for themselves. The vision shrinks and they mistake it for focus. How can you make it big when all you see is trouble and restrains, etc?
Find opportunities, interact with people, learn from the experienced! You have the free ticket to everyone's expertise: the Web, don't just use it, try and utilize it like many are all around you and build connections. The more connected you are through this medium and the more noise [one that makes sense] you create the higher are your chances of being heard, have something useful, make people see your dream and arouse their interest. Make an opportunity and don't wait for it!
One such chance for you is Echelon in Singapore that will showcase around 50 startups and have over 600 attendees. If you are in the Pan Asia region, have an idea that can make use of such a gathering and can afford a trip, make sure you visit it. The conference is scheduled for June 1 and 2.
