Gas bills go up by 18% can we take any more

This winter is going to be tough for people in the United Kingdom, food prices up, gas prices up, electricity prices up, house prices down and prospect of loosing your job make the whole situation very depressing. But to add to the strain on the general public's finances, British Gas, owned by Centrica, is putting up its domestic gas and electricity prices from 18 August. Gas bills will rise by an average of 18% and electricity bills by an average of 16%. The change will affect nine million households with the average dual fuel customer paying an extra £190 a year. But this is not the worst, last December gas prices were increased by 7% so in the last 8 months that is an increase of 25%, what is the world coming to.

The company blamed the rising wholesale cost of gas, which has gone up by 30% since last winter. But if gas prices have gone up how do they explain record profits???.

British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said its bills were being driven higher by the fact that the company buys 50% of its gas on the international wholesale market. "We are buying in a global energy market and have to pay the market rate," he said. "Rising wholesale costs is an issue facing all energy suppliers," he added.

The company said it had been selling energy at a loss for the past three or four months. "After we put these prices up we will be making a fair return," Ian Peters, a British Gas director said, "We are investing in the future energy supply of the UK... and energy efficiency in our customers' homes," he added.

But there is one thing for sure Mr Phil Bentley will not be turning down his heating this winter, but the rest of us will be.

Now do not be surprised if another 10 to 20% is added on during September or October, because for these guys enough is just never enough

Being kind this Christmas Being kind this Christmas - [quote="Nana":ndy83sc7]My friend wants to go around the streets on Christmas night giving homeless people $20 bills. Maybe I'll tell him to start a fundraiser, find a few sponsors and hold an event instead? It could be for everyone who don't have a families to be with during Christmas? They can all get together on Christmas day and have some fun and get to know each other. (sort of like a little family?) It probably sounds better in theory though, lol.[/quote:ndy83sc7] Hi Nana, I think your idea is much better than your friend's for 2 reasons: a) It's not really safe handing out cash on the streets. If people know you're carrying a lot of $20 bills, you guys could get mugged. b) While giving homeless people $20 each is very kind, what's going to happen once they've spent it all? It's better to teach someone to fish than to simply give them a one-time fish. Maybe you and your friend could create a service to help homeless people get permanent employment??
Re: Entrepreneurship? Just do it Re: Entrepreneurship? Just do it - I totally agreed with you and let me site this example. The guys that started Youtube were working with paypal.com earning wages to keep them going. Today there are not a millionaire but a billionaire. If they are still at paypal they would still be earning enough to let them pay their bills
Re: Service Or Product? Re: Service Or Product? - I think that's true VSL. You would definitely have to have the right product for the times. Perhaps something about saving money......if you know of several ways that you are able to do that. Or a gadget that will save them money. One that is a necessity; like a vacuum or something that would save a lot of energy so they'd see the difference in their bills. Yes, timing is everything!

you need passion/desire and sustainable persistance you need passion/desire and sustainable persistance - sounds over simplified, but to me it has been very true. starting a business should be more about starting a big life change towards something that you have unwaivering passion and desire to do. the truth is you will never know all you need to know to start the business your a starting. the truth is there are many things that will test your resolve to starting your business. from simple things like making the time to do small tasks or making personal sacrifices like spending less time with your family. i've also come to learn that starting a business is about sustainable persistence. ensure that you can continue to sustain your current responsibilities while taking small steps towards your business everyday. most often, i'd say don't quit your job. assuming you have bills to pay. sustain your ability to take care of those bills while taking those baby steps towards the business you desire. in the end, nothing is overnight. it's more like being a farmer. planting seeds of thought, nurturing them, weathering storms, and working hard everyday with the risk that there may not be any fruit. here's where the passion and desire come in. because if you really are passionate and desire your business idea, you will have no problem re-planting those seeds and starting over again. here's where sustainable persistence comes in. if you disregard your responsibilities in pursuit of your dream business and it doesn't work out, you don't want to have to sell the farm. selling the farm or being put in position where you need to put all your focus on just surviving puts you further away from your dream. think long and hard about that passion/desire. make sure it is true and sincere with your own DNA. if it is true. you will succeed.
