Article Overview: Creating a Facebook fan page is an excellent way to market your company or organization; leaving it unattended is asking for trouble. Too many companies are creating fan pages and then leaving them unattended, thus ignoring potential conversation. Although there is not a specific notification option for Facebook fan pages, there is a way to receive notification of comments on your posts, pictures, videos and notes.

The biggest mistake a company can make is to create a social network that no one monitors.
I teach people how to simply and effectively maintain a social network to market their service or product. I always explain that they need to have a way to monitor comments the minute they are posted. Too many companies are submitting status updates, pictures and videos and ignoring the page.
It's obvious to fans when there is no one monitoring a site. The American Heart Association posted an article on how overeating can change the brain's response to food. I posted a comment about the effects of corn syrup and three people "liked" the comment yet no one from the AHA continued the conversation. This was a seriously missed opportunity to gain donors, volunteers or just more followers. As I reviewed their page I noticed people are posting spam, other comments are left unanswered and there is no sign of anyone maintaining the site. This is all too common and the end result is a loss of interest and possible loss of clients or donors, depending on your business.
Here is a simple tip to monitoring comments on your fan pages: All you need to do is "like" each of your Facebook Fan Page updates. This not only allows you to be notified when someone comments on your post, it adds an update on your personal page which could direct a little more traffic to the fan page.
You should do this to all status updates, pictures, videos and notes. This way you will receive a notification any time anyone comments on your fan page allowing you the opportunity to continue the conversation or remove inappropriate content. Now that you "like" your comments, make sure your notifications are set up to alert you for that. You can do this my going to your personal profile page, click "settings" in the top right hand corner of your page, then in the drop down, click account settings. Once there, click notifications, scroll down to links and put a check mark under both boxes referring to links. Remember to hit "Save" at the end of the page.
Now that you are getting notifications, remember that you do need to check for spam once a day to make sure no one is advertising on your page.
