Edward Christopher Wente and the Condenser Microphone

Edward Christopher Wente, or E.C. Wente, was hired by Western Electric to improve the quality of telephone audio. By the end of his life, E.C. Wente was known for his work with the condenser microphone. Wente's work was instrumental in the history of the telephone, telecommunications and the development of the answering service industry. Wente's research on the microphone was used specifically in sound studies. He was hired to try and relieve the background noise that was coming up on telephone receivers. Wente used the old electrostatic transmitter to change it into the first flat frequency response microphone, or condenser transmitter. This condenser transmitter consisted of one hundred times greater sensitivity than the sensitive transmitter. This sensitivity made the device practical, minus the fact that the device needed to be connected to a vacuum tube preamplifier to work to the best of its ability. The vacuum tube acted as an amplifier of the low single output. As years passed, Wente condensed the designs allowing electrical recording process and motion picture sound. This allowed the device to have different models such as being used on tabletop, floor standing, or able to be hung.

Besides working with the condenser microphone, E.C. Wente and his team were assigned to develop a sound system to be used in films and cinema theaters. This invention came to be known as the "light valve." The light valve used the previous vacuum tube and converted audio voltage levels of light to expose movie film. It produced variable density sound patterns on film. This was the basis for the "sound-on film" process in later years.

Wente also aided in the invention of the compression driver, the dynamic mic, and acoustical wall materials. With all of the innovations he has made, E.C. Wente definitely stands out in the sound and production business and is an instrumental figure in the history and technology of the modern day telephone answering service.

Re: Don’t worry, Enrich your life and Be happy Re: Don’t worry, Enrich your life and Be happy - [quote="Christopher":2b2448ak]I am a born pessimist. Can I do something to change my negative thoughts into positive ones? I try very hard not to engage in negative feelings. However hard I may try, I end up with the most antagonistic mental state. This has harmed me in many ways. I really wish I could think better![/quote:2b2448ak] Hi Christopher First of all welcome to the forum, I am sure that you will enjoy being here and will learn a lot. As far as always feeling negative, I would suggest that first of all, stop continuously telling yourself that you are negative. By doing that you are actually affirming it and your subconscious mind will endorse it. The subconscious mind believes whatever you keep telling it. Try some positive affirmations. Say them out loud or to yourself as often as you can (even if in the beginning you don't believe it) and whenever you find yourself thinking negatively, stop and repeat some of the positive affirmations. Don't expect miracles, it is not an overnight process, but over time you will find your mindset changing for the better. Hope this helps MichelleJ
Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time - Hi Evan, I have a new suggestion for "Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time" and a suggestion for your Learning from the Masters series: 1. Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time = Christopher Columbus: "... he saw the possibility of treasure and commerce where others saw only danger. He committed so wholeheartedly to that vision that not even dozens of rejections and ongoing penury could dissuade him from pursuing a journey to Asia via the West. He built on his technical strengths as a seaman to plan a viable journey and eventually marshal an expedition." - Christopher Hoenig, 6 Essential Secrets for Thinking on a New Level I bought Hoenig's book about 10 years ago but couldn't make head or tail of it then... reading it now and finding it inspirational... 2. Nomination for Learning from the Masters video: Dee Hock, founder of VISA. (Source = Hoenig.)

Re: Don’t worry, Enrich your life and Be happy Re: Don’t worry, Enrich your life and Be happy - Hi Christopher, Welcome to the forum. I used to be a pessimist like you, one day I was in a lecture and came out with this: The glass is not half full and half empty, the glass is completely full, half water (or wine - your choice) and half air. Air is not nothing, it is everything. Since then it was easier for me to push the bad thoughts away, and my husband helped too. BTW, it was a chemistry lecture. Good luck
Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada - Hello all! I'm a Virtual Assistant and just started my business this past summer. I specialize in freeing up time and saving money for my clients by taking care of the time consuming, yet necessary, tasks that keep them from working on the revenue generating aspect of the business. At present my clients are from one end of Canada to the other - Prince Edward Island, British Columbia and here in Nova Scotia. I do a variety of tasks for them; client contact management, newsletters, website and blog updating; social network support and maintenance, and admin support within the financial services industry to name a few. I joined this forum because I feel it would be valuable to connect with those outside the VA world. I'm looking to get a different perspective on business from the varied entrepreneurs here and be able to give something back as well. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
