10 Hard Drive File Recovery Tips

Typically, when people lose data and require hard drive file recovery, they often surrender the data to the abyss, thinking that they will never get it back. Depending on the data importance versus cost, this may indeed be the case. But readying yourself for an inevitable hard drive failure is easier than you might imagine, and these 10 helpful hints are a superb way to be ready. 1. Always use virus protection and either Windows or external firewalls on your computer to protect it.

2. Understand that performing disk operations such as defragmenting when you are currently missing an important file is the best way to lose that file. Once you think you have lost the file, ensure you run your system as infrequently as possible.

3. In most cases, using utilities like CHKDSK, Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor will not help you to recover your data completely. In fact, they can actually corrupt your data by recovering it incorrectly.

4. If you see that you cannot boot your system see if you can get it to boot in safe mode, then try to uninstall or disable any of the software you have installed recently because they may be the root cause. Another idea is to run the system restore and see if that fixes the problem.

5. If you are considering purchasing data recovery software, ensure you investigate the product thoroughly. Check out tech support forums and actual user testimonials before you spend any money. The truth is, many data recovery software applications are substandard products, and can actually destroy data. Make sure yours isn't one of them.

6. Your file system is a crucial thing to know when seeking data recovery software, but isn't when you're looking for data recovery services. Most professional data recovery service technicians will know what file system you are using based on your operating system. So know that, at the very least.

7. Want to make data recovery a no hassle situation? Backup all important data at regularly scheduled times. Weekly is good, but daily is best.

8. Backup is not a total solution, as it will miss some recent files. Still, it's better than doing nothing.

9. Pause for a moment, and write down all of the things performed before your files went missing. If you have a file that asks to be saved, do so under a different name so that other versions do not get overwritten.

10. If you decide to go to an expert for Hard Drive File Recovery, make sure you have all the pertinent details at hand. A professional data recovery technician will ask you several questions over the phone to diagnose your issue.

Hopefully you will not have a hard drive failure which requires hard drive file recovery. But if you do, now you know that there are actions you can take and you don't have to despair that all of your files and data is gone. But remember that prevention is the best idea.

It's all about prevention and forethought.

Re: Picking an external hard drive to backup my files Re: Picking an external hard drive to backup my files - So I ended up buying a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB External Hard Drive from TigerDirect.ca for $97.99. While I wasn't able to get the pre-installed software to work on my computer for whatever reason... I was still able to transfer all 14 GB of my personal files via the old fashioned "copy" and "paste" method. Hopefully this won't compromise the safety of my stored data.

When Webhost providers go bad When Webhost providers go bad - I've had my websites on IPower for the last two years or so. I didn't really care much for their interface - geocities has one that's much better (but they angered me so I refuse to use them anymore) but I was used to it. For the last several months they've been "transitioning" to a new system, and now, finally, it's upon me, and I really, really hate their File Manager system. They've done [i:2kaa5kss]one [/i:2kaa5kss]good thing - you can now see the date that you last updated any particular file. Before that you never knew what date anything had been uploaded. But the rest of it is just clunky and bad and quite frankly, inept! I just shot off a pretty angry complaint letter to their "Help" desk, not that I think it will do any good. So I'm in the hunt for a new web service provider. Anybody here familiar with Geocities, but have some service provide [i:2kaa5kss]other [/i:2kaa5kss]than Geocities who has the same type of File Manager system as they do?
