Over the years, mobile phones have become a household item, and today, nearly each and every member of the global population possesses a mobile phone. It has been estimated that the majority of this tech savvy population will be using smart-phones by 2012, with the international sales following a steep rise from 2010-2015.

These smart-phones come with really advanced features, a major portion of which need the Internet for their proper functioning. Now, the rise in sales means that the use of mobile web will increase 100%. This calls for the attention of the companies, as they need to make more investments in the designing of mobile web, hiring of designers who excel in their job of Web Design to create websites which are mobile-friendly.

With the present statistics showing the huge number of people using the mobile internet on a regular basis, it’s imperative for the web designers and website developers to learn their craft, so as to make maximum possible development and design practices for mobile devices. There is no need to learn any new technology for mobile Website Design.

What is essentially needed is a new viewpoint, since this form of Website Design is restrictive, and very much dependent on the kind of browser used. It is decidedly more compact than standard sites. To excel in Mobile Website Design, one has to have a creative bent of mind so that he can come up with solutions for the issues that this kind of Website Design presents, and come up with a result which should be as user-friendly and handy as their standard versions.

A basic knowledge should be primarily ingrained in the Web Developers. One can’t be successful in a mobile Web Design using the same structure and construction as a computer one. The accessibility Web Design guidelines for developing a mobile website, as set by the W3C, should be strictly followed. WAP technology is mainly used for browsing in mobile phones.

Now, the WAP browsers have certain disadvantages in terms of screen size and other parameters, which require the stripping down of the current designs of Web developers. The easiest method of building a mobile website is to make a standard one compatible with the WAP browser. However, this practice involves higher chances of design, structuring and layout.

Apart from the Windows Mobile and the iPhone Platform, the other common Operating Systems used are Palm OS, Mobile Linux, Android and the BlackBerry Platform. There are also available some proprietary ones particular to certain phones, such as the ones available with the Verizon phones.

With increased amount of brainstorming on this topic, different browsers are also available today, which have designed specially, keeping the factor of Mobile Web Design in mind. A few such browsers are the Safari for the iPhone, WebOS for Palm, Internet Explorer Mobile for Windows Mobile, Android browser, BlackBerry browser and Opera browser.

Some other OSs is in use in the Nokia phones and certain other brands. Some, like the Operating Systems, are made on a proprietary basis; others are designed by WebKit, Gecko and other such platforms.
