Fast computing on mobile devices is what customers are looking for giving away to the rise of Smartphone market. Smart phones allow user to access internet, stream videos, access Wi-Fi, send mails, chat, instant message, access social networking sites and a lot more. Due to the increasing popularity for social media, the mindset of the people has also changed. All the major mobile device platform developers have introduced new operating systems for mobile devices. Introduction of android by Google, Apple iOS, Microsoft's Windows 7 for mobile devices and Symbian V3 by Nokia provided a wide range for customers to choose from.

Tablets PCs, the latest introduction to mobile computing, are also attracting the business community to a great extent. The iPad from apple introduced last year hit the market with a boom. Apple sold 7.5 million Ipad devices in first six months.

Microsoft tried to sell tablets in past but failed to capture the market but apple's ipad with high resolution display and sleek design attracted millions of customers. Google keeping an eye on the mobile technology market came in partnership with Verizon wireless to launch Android 2.2 with major changes in previous versions. Android supports third party software installation developed by Google developers as well as the open source community. Android helped in bringing down the prices of smart phones under $100. Smart phones powered with android became the first priority of smart phone lovers because of its features, customization and value-for-money price. Soon, Apple launched its iphone 4G with some improvements and new features over its previous 3G release. Apple also opened its iphone platform to support third party application after three years of first product launch in this category. A formidable memory of 32 GB and free unlimited access to the iTunes store for users also helped in building a strong and loyal customer base.

The decrease in the price of data plan by GSM providers also increased the popularity of the smart phones. Thousands of little programs turned these smart phones into small gaming zones, photo editors and chatting machines. Mobile applications became the buzz of the town. This also helped companies like Google, Verizon and RIM to open their own online third party application market.

In US, Sprint and Verizon launched their first 4G handset and service this summer as wireless network moved solidly to 4G. With the introduction of 4G technology by the telecom service providers, mobile device manufactures are also introducing new compatible devices in market. Customers are looking for features like Wi-Fi, EDGE, IM, Social networking access, touch screen, qwerty keyboard in their gadgets. Application developers and device manufactures are also working on various mobile technologies to improve the security features of these devices. Chip makers, product engineering companies, and handset makers are also rolling out new security features for safe guarding emails and data access from mobile devices. Chinese smart phones, Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp are also coming up in market in near future with Google Android powered phones.

The next decade is going to be vital for mobile technologies as the potentials for mobiles are far from achieved.
