Most Laptop Users are Probably Able to Replace a Broken Screen
Unfortunately, it is very easy to damage a laptop screen either cosmetically for catastrophically. You may just have scratched it where this does not necessitate replacing the screen or it may be cracked or shattered where replacement is essential to use the laptop.
If you have dropped or sat on your laptop and the screen is obviously cracked then you can be sure that it needs replacing. However, the laptop screen may look undamaged but either does not display the image properly or is completely absent then the screen may or may not be faulty. You should further investigate the cause before changing the screen.
Once you have decided that the screen must be replaced you must purchase the correct size and model. This is not as easy as it sounds, as there are many thousands to choose between. The only way to be certain which screen is required is to locate the exact make and model details that are always located on the back of the old screen. If you fit the wrong or similar model then it may not work at all or may produce an image that does not fit properly on the screen
To remove the old broken screen you will firstly have to remove the screen surround (bezel). Half a dozen screws located behind plastic or rubber caps usually secure this. Some manufactures in addition to using screws to hold the bezel use double-sided sticky tape making removal very difficult. Fortunately, to does not matter if you further damage the old screen but you must not crack or break the bezel. A few laptop manufacturers make removal more difficult as you need to remove the palm rest as the lower part of the bezel is secured under it. Above all, before starting removal of the bezel look to see how it is secured as if you fail to remove a securing screw it will probably result in breakage.
Once the bezel has been removed you can unscrew the screen from the hinges, there are usually several small centre point screws. You should now remove the data connector from the screen, be careful though as there is usually a piece of sticky tape holding it in place. You must pull the connector, not the cable, using fingertip pressure. If you break the connector or pull, any of the wires out of it then the whole cable will then need replacing. For modern screens, this completes the removal, but the older screens with a cold cathode fluorescent bulb have a further connector to remove from the inverter. This simply pulls out.
Now you should be able to install your new screen. In order to keep it as clean and safe as possible try to leave the protective plastic sheet on until the installation is complete. When reconnecting the cable lay it flat and position it carefully matching the connector. Use only very light even pressure as it is very easy to damage it using excessive force. Remember to add a sticky label or sticky tape over the connector as it may otherwise eventually pull off due to lid opening and closing. Remember to connect the inverter lead if it has one. When replacing the bezel use light even pressure as if the screen is not quite position correctly it may otherwise crack. Likewise, do not use too much force when replacing the bezel securing screws.
Like most DIY jobs, provided you have the correct tools and are careful then you should be able to complete a laptop screen change like a professional.
