Article Overview: The majority of computer users require Internet connection to connect to social network sites or search engines etc. If the computer is in a fixed location then cabled LAN connection is usually used. However, if you are using a notebook, laptop or netbook then a wireless connection is usually adopted to link to the Internet. Unfortunately, wireless WI-FI Internet connections are often slow and unreliable particularly when the router is some distance from the computer. In this article I will explain how you may improve the reliability and speed of a WI-FI connection.

Several Ways to Increase the Range and Reliability of Your Wireless Router Connection
The majority of computer users require Internet connection to connect to social network sites or search engines etc.
Any metal or wires will interfere with the wireless signal transmitted from the router to the receiver found on the portable computer. The larger the metal objects the more of the signal that will be blocked to your portable computer. This results in the WI-FI signal strength and the speed of the Internet connection being reduced. You may find that moving to a different location in the room may give better or worse results. A mirror will act like a large piece of metal as it has a silver backing; so avoid placing the router near any mirror.
Set your wireless router to maximum transmit power and choose the fastest communication setting this is usually 802-11a, 802-11g or 802-11g depending on how new it is. Whilst setting the router remember to setup security, although this will not affect the speed of the connection it will keep unwanted users from reducing your bandwidth by using your internet.
Any gadget that operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency will interfere with the WI-FI transmission; these include some phones, remote controls etc. Even microwave ovens may radiate at this frequency and block the router's signal.
Aluminium foil carefully positioned behind the router's aerial can greatly increase the signal strength but only in one direction. You may wish to experiment by curving and bending the foil so that it reflects the wireless signal towards the portable computer. Alternatively, you can purchase WI-FI wireless repeater. You can place this midway between the router and the computer receiving the weakest signal strength. This will definitely boost the WI-FI signal reaching the most remote device.
It is very unlikely that a WI-FI connection will ever give as reliable and fast connection as a wired LAN connection offers. Currently, 802-11a and 802-11g under ideal conditions may result in a connection speed of about 25 Mbps whereas LAN will always give 100 Mbps. If you are lucky enough to have an 802-11n connection then a connection speed of 100 Mbps is possible by careful positioning of the wireless router and portable computer.
Most laptop, netbook and notebook users like the convenience of a WI-FI connection but are disappointed with the speed and reliability that results. A wired LAN connection will always result in a more reliable, faster connection to the Internet. This may not be too important if you are just using social network sites and emails but if you are intending to watch streaming video then a wired LAN connect will be essential.
