Rarely can you drop your laptop without it suffering severe damage. Often the damage isn't immediately apparent; this article describes the probable outcome.

If it was dropped on a corner or edge then you definitely are likely to see cracks in this area, however, cracks and chips are more likely to be seen almost anywhere around the case. These are the most obvious signs of damage. If you see a crack or cracks in the case then it indicates that the laptop could have been dropped from a great height; there's likely to be other damage that isn't immediately seen. Further tests and examinations must be done to check if the laptop has some other damage.

If the laptop was turned on or was in a sleeping state then quite a small drop will almost always damage the hard drive. Whenever you turn on the laptop you may find that Windows won't start, loads with errors, loads then crashes or is incredibly slow. They are all signs of hard drive damage and failure. You may or may not be able to save your valuable data subject to the extent of the damage on the hard disk drive; but you will definitely need a new hard disk drive for proper operation of this laptop, you will have to reinstall the operating system when the hard disk is installed. If the laptop was turned off then the hard disk is probable ok, however, if it had been set in sleeping mode then the hard disk drive may have been operational and will almost certainly be damaged.

Check the display; if you observe any cracks, lines or bars down or across the display, blotches or what seems like ink leaking then the display may be damaged during the fall. A damaged or cracked laptop screen can never de repaired, your laptop has to have a new screen fitted by a laptop repair company since it is too easy to damage it during replacement.

If your laptop is dropped at the same time as the power connector jack is plugged into the power socket it is likely that the internal socket may become dislodged or broken from its internal connection. Frequently you will find that the laptop no longer charges the battery or works on mains only power where the internal power connector has been damaged. The power connector jack may get very hot in use; this also indicates a faulty connector.

If you can't see any apparent damage and your laptop won't power up with a picture then one or more RAM chips may have become dislodged from their sockets. The majority of recent laptops employ a RAM flap underneath secured by screws; remove this and make certain the chips are correctly inserted and haven't become detached.

Assuming you have checked all of the above hints and still your laptop won't power up properly then there could be a fault on the motherboard. It is mounted within the laptop case. The motherboard inside a laptop can easily be broken when subject to dropping. Copper tracks may break or electronic components might be broken or cracked when the motherboard is stressed. If a laptop motherboard is damaged it willit will eventually either need repairing or replacing; repair is a very specialized job and is just done by a small number of laptop repair companies.

The conclusion is always to handle your laptop very carefully, especially when turned on and avoid expensive repairs bills and potential data loss.

laptop vs. Desktop - I'm not a heavy gamer or graphics person so a Laptop is ideal for me for all the obvious reasons (portability, wireless, work on the go, etc etc) Major downside is the battery power and the cost to replace it - half as much as the cost of the laptop on my current IBM.
Re: Who are the key players in your life? - I'd have to say my family, who supported me when I first started out in business for myself... especially my sister, who bought me my Laptop! A supportive family can make anyone a success. A non-supportive family - would make it very tough, I would think. All the more reason to only allow positive-thinking people in to your life and ditch anyone who brings you down with nagging or slighting jokes, et al!

Lojack is something police can use to track your vehicle as soon as it leaves without your permission while you as the owner doesn't even know where it's installed on your vehicle.
