Businesses have evolved their data access habits since the past few years and now require data access from remote locations. They want to access company data for their workforce from remote locations securely.
Such secure access to confidential data through internet was provided with two disparate technologies: VPN i.e. Virtual Private Network and Cloud Computing. VPN is nothing but a private network, which uses a public network to connect with remote users or sites. On the contrary, cloud computing is practiced by translating the server on an online service or facility for using enterprise applications, e-mail server etc.
VPNs provides well-designed business benefits in terms of
- Extended connections for remote access
- Secure data exchange
- Savings of time and expenses for the workforce
- Flexibility for the clients to access the business intranet through internet.
- remote access as well as computational tasks on company data, for organizational purposes.
- remote data storage of organizational data.
- Outsourcing of resources both hardware and software.
- VPN is a separate network other than internet, privately owned by an individual business. Cloud on the other hand is something different. Cloud also belongs to a single authority, but is not really owned by any business or organization. Clouds are rented by different organizations for business purposes.
- VPN still needs traditional network nodes like servers, data centers, firewalls etc. to set-up a private network. Cloud has got an advantage to outsource or rent all these services and resources from a single vendor on a low price on rental basis.
- In VN, all the network and company resources are to be managed by the company itself and in cloud systems, all the resource maintenance is done by the service provider or vendor associated.
- VPN provides a secure tunnel to company’s workforce to remotely access the intranet of the organization. Cloud computing services migrate the network of an organization to a remote location, managed by a vendor. It allows the employees to access different resource from internet.
- Intranet of the organization resides behind a firewall so as to securely manage the data. Cloud, on the other hand, manages the data using vendors firewall, security protocol and other security measures.
- VPN do not posses any computational capability for data processing. It could only provide the access to data and organization’s network. Cloud possesses computational capabilities and data could be processed on the cloud using various software and applications.
