The System that is used for controlling all the required information related to hardware and software is known as configuration management system. The information that is maintained by this system mostly consists of installed versions, updates of the software packages and operating systems. Hardware information like the location of network, IP addresses and Media Access Codes are also stored as this information is also required time to time. For some special information, special configuration management software is used by various organizations.

Whenever there is a software or hardware failure or if any upgrade needs to be done, the technicians need to have all the information of the installed versions of the software. Technicians can easily access the required information from the configuration management system and related databases. With this information technicians can take correct decision regarding the upgrade needed or changes required in the system hardware or software. One of the most important advantages of implementation of configuration management system is that all the configurations can be reviewed in advance to decide weather the changes will be compatible with the other systems or not, removing the threat of operational failure.

In any software development company, Configuration management systems are also used where they are called Unified Configuration management. With the help of unified configuration management system, the development team keeps all records of various information related to project such as source code, documentation, bugs, required changes and changes done. All this information is required from time to time in the course of software development. If particular software needs to be upgraded or requires major changes, the information is easily fetched form the configuration management system about the previous releases.

Every configuration management system consists of Configuration Management Databases. These databases keep all the records of the configuration items defined by the organization and also the relationship of these items with each other. If any changes are applied to these items, all the change logs are maintained so it can also be checked that who made the changes and at what point of time. Configuration management system allows the organizations to build change management processes in a way that information can flow to the right people at the right time so that changes can be approved.

Configuration items of the systems are not only related to the software and hardware specifications of the organization but they also include core business processes such as the communication time and details with various clients, services provided to clients, details of every service purchased or ordered by clients as this information helps the support team in providing future assistance. Software configuration management systems ensure the integrity, reliability and reproducibility of developing software products from conception to release helping software companies to provide best ,software development services to their clients. Because of all these advantages every big organization is using it.
