What Journalists Want

Journalists want good stories, not promotional press releases. If you can give them a compelling idea, you are making their job easier. There is no reason why they would not write about you.

Here are 61 suggestions you can use to come up with your unique story idea. Many of the ideas listed come courtesy of PR expert Scott Lorenz. Remember the more unique and interesting it is, the more likely it will be picked up. Also keep in mind your audience. A local community paper will have different interests than a national one.

1) Announce a recognition that you have received.

2) Discuss an industry trend and be the expert.

3) Create a Hall of Fame and induct some of your industry's top players.

4) Make a list - the best, the worst, the most, the least (ie. Top 10 Best Dressed).

5) Establish an index - your own version of the standard of living.

6) Produce a petition - what's a hot topic you can rally people around?

7) Announce a new service.

8) Announce a new product.

9) Tie in with a national holiday, a birthday or anniversary.

10) Report a new study of your own and your analysis or forecast.

11) Tie in with a controversy by commenting on it.

12) Co-op an event with the media.

13) Utilize a national survey or study to your benefit.

14) Announce your exhibit at a trade show or convention.

15) Commission a survey and report the results.

16) Write a white paper and announce its availability at your web site.

17) Create and promote a special event.

18) Use a current news event to frame your release.

19) Host a seminar and announce the information discussed.

20) Announce an upcoming speaking engagement.
