Homeless MOMtrepreneur: Car Camping as a Successful Woman in Business

Guest post by: Angelina Musik

Article Overview: In 1999 I was a homeless MOMtrepreneur with two kids fleeing my first husband and leaving a successful home cleaning and organizing business behind. I had no choice but to hit the road for my own safety and that of my children. As long as I kept this journey an adventure for my kids we were good to go. They were nine and eleven at the time and had no clue of the reality at hand. They just figured we were traveling from Texas to Washington State to start over. And so we did.

Homeless MOMtrepreneur: Car Camping as a Successful Woman in Business

Adjust your perception:
Not everyone has the means to stay in hotels every night as they travel, so sometimes you need to think ahead and be resourceful. If you need to do a road trip as a traveling author or salesperson or perhaps you are moving to start over across the U.S., there are ways to save money and enjoy an adventure at the same time.

Pick the right vehicle:
The vehicle I picked that would accommodate my trip and that was my Nissan Xterra. I can store my things in the back during the day as I drive and then put them on top of the roof and in the front seat once it comes time to sleeping at night.

Sleeping Items:
Depending on the time of year you want to be sure that you have the right sleeping bag that can tolerate the right temperatures outside, invest in a contouring pillow and a foam mat that will go under your sleeping bag to provide softer and better support.

Food:
No need to bring an ice chest full of goodies. Bring non-perishable items and then buy your fresh items while in route. It's a great way to take a break. You really don't save much money by packing up your vehicle with groceries from home when you start. Plus it takes up space you need to stretch out on.

"I've had the opportunity to eat breakfast while overlooking the ocean for several days in a row and have learned how to use orange peels to keep the flies away. They don't like the citrus."

Where to park and sleep:
There are many campgrounds along the way and that require a small fee and also provide showers - which is great!! If you can shower every other day - using baby wipes to keep clean in between - then look into staying at some state parks. It's cheap and offers an incredible view!

Kernel Sanders lived in his car and so have many others for a period of time on their journey to success but we often don't hear about their stories until after they have succeeded.

As a MOMtrepreneur I believe it's important to be resourceful with what you have to avoid over extending yourself and getting into financial trouble — this really means running out of cash to sustain yourself.

Avoid your spending too much of your money on things that can wait. Then, be sure that you are properly capitalized for the investment requirements needed to successfully launch and sustain your business for a good period of time. The time period will vary depending your industry.

Keep business stresses low by living within your means while embracing selective risks required catapulting you to the next level as an entrepreneur. Also, remember that part of the pleasure of being an MOMtrepreneur is having the freedom to take the time to enjoy the journey.

MORE CAR CAMPING TIPS
***Learn to pack the car efficiently and only bring what is necessary. Be organized, so that you can find things easily and quickly.

***Set phone to a ringing feature, not vibrate, so that you don't mistake it for cow mooing vibrations in your car.

***Purchase sleeping bags that can endure the range of temperatures you will be camping in.

***Purchase a sleeping pad that you can gain some soft comfort from that your sleeping bag goes over.

***Don't forget your pillow and two sets of top sheets to take turns with.

***Bring baby or personal wipes, toilet paper and plastic bags to throw your trash into.

***Bring sanitizing hand cleaner and hand lotion, a First Aid Kit with pain, allergy medicine, and bug spray.

***To stay warm by bringing clothes to layer with. t-shirts, shorts, jeans/pants, socks, shoes/boots, camp shoes, hat/cap, sweater, rain poncho, underwear swim suit, laundry bag.

***Bring laundry soap to wash your clothes in Laundromats.

***A few rolls of quarters to use at RV showers locations and at Laundromats.

***Maintain at least two gallons of water on hand at all times for you and the car, to avoid hydration and constipation.

***Purchase snacks like cheese sticks, fruit, and food for a day from a grocery store instead of eating fast food. This is one way to avoid putting on weight from being inactive while driving.

***Power Adapter for your cell phone, computer, a three prong power source and a Internet searching device to get online.

***Any makeshift safe items you can jerry rig to help support what you do while being a passenger in the car.

***A squishy or bean pillow that can conform into many uses. It's more comfortable than an inflatable pillow.

***Be sure to stop and stretch often to get your blood circulation going to avoid contributing to varicose veins.

***Stop and enjoy the scenery and appreciate the 'crazy stuff that happens unexpectedly' as part of the adventure.

***Enjoy personal and professional development materials in the form of books, CDs, and magazines.

Greetings from Camping Embroidery Greetings from Camping Embroidery - Hi, my name is Ray Laubert and my wife (Daisy) and I own a new start up business called Camping Embroidery (campingembroidery(dot)com). We started this business as a part time business to supplement our income and build it so that we can have the freedom to move around the country while still earning some money. As the name implies, we specialize in embroidery and printed clothing for camping related activities. Naturally we can do other other industries the same services, but we market mainly to the camping and RV communities.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - That is a great idea, David. This is what I had in mind for the Women's section, but it makes sense to post in on the main site. Of course, I'm waiting for some women to step up to the plate and share how they could use some support on taking the next step with their business! If you are a Business Woman reading this, I invite you to consider that this is not displaying weakness in any form. Peer mentoring and Coaching is incredibly valuable. You get to bounce your ideas off others, hear perspectives from outside your own box, and feel the power of others cheering you on. To me, it's wisdom to use all of our available resources to move towards business success. That's why I have my own Coach and my own Mentor Coaching Group. I also offer that to my clients. These are services one usually has to pay for and you could enjoy some of it free right here! So who wants to start? Can you tell I'm excited about the possibilities for you even before you begin? Warmly, Tami
