The right support team vs. the lone ranger
Terry Young, inventor of the tennis shoe light that Nike eventually purchased for their kid's sport shoes, shares,
"After many, many years of trying many projects on my own and seeing the many frustrations that I was faced with, I came to realize that there are certain elements that I have a deep passion for and that I am really good at," says Young, also the founder of IceAthletic.com.
"However, there are only a few elements that I am actually great at. Once I came to the realization of what my limitations where, I focused on being great and tried to surround myself with people who were great in their own right, as well."
Sometimes families and friends are not supportive because they don't understand what you are trying to achieve. Invite them into your world to show them what you are doing. Hopefully, by offering them a glimpse of understanding, you will open their eyes, but it is also possible to find external support.
The value of having a strong support team
"Starting a business can be a lonely thing. You need to educate yourself. You need to have the support of someone who can mentor you and pull you through," said MOMMaria Sanford, aka "The Salsa Lady.
"You need the emotional support. It's an emotional ride. If it's your passion, your heart is tied to it and it can be a roller coaster."
SUPPORT IN ITS MANY FORMS
Physical support:
I encourage entrepreneurs to join a trade or business association for networking and training, contributing expertise to others and learning from like-minded entrepreneurs.
Digital support:
There are many industry forums and support groups online locally, nationally and internationally. In the forums, the exchange of ideas and resolution of industry problems are shared for the greater benefit of those in that industry.
Media/Print support:
This is a form of mentoring through articles from experts who share their story and tips on how they have succeeded in life and business. Film documentaries and "how to" TV shows also offer insightful information that may prompt us to attempt our business from a different angle — this might set us apart in the marketplace.
Professional support:
Selecting a handful of people for running different elements of a business pulls the burden off of us having to "know it all." A CPA/Accountant relieves the stress of making sure accounting practices are done properly, while hiring a marketing professional with a successful track record of return on investment provides peace of mind that dollars spent in this area won't be wasted.
When you pick the right strong support team your failure rates go down tremendously and your rate of success can skyrocket exponentially.

No matter how long we've been in business, we can still gleam from others who have succeeded before us. This helps us reduce and avoid potential mistakes and might even accelerate our success. Many small business owners have embraced a "lone ranger" mentality, and that has statistically contributed to the rate of business failure.
