Seven Ways to Get Prepared and Turn a Natural (or other kind of) Disaster into a Positive Situation
1. Make sure your cell phone is working – you may be relying on it heavily if land lines are down! Review your plan and make sure you’re getting the best price with as many options as you can – if anyone told me I’d be texting as much as my 13-year-old – I would have told them they were crazy. You want to be accessible and if the power is out, these tools can be a God send.
2. Stock up on school supplies (and snacks) so you’re not stuck unable to get caught up on necessary, but less exciting tasks like cleaning off your desk, making necessary files for current projects and clients information. Make a list and order your supplies on line at www.officedepot.com today.
3. Diversify the geographic location of your virtual staff. I’m now actively seeking virtual assistants from non-disaster areas across the US ! Wish me luck!
4. Maintain a reading file and have a couple of books on hand that you’ve been dying to read, but haven’t had the time. Take this time to invest in yourself and get educated on a topic that will make you more knowledgeable and could make you more money by sharing it with your client base as well.
5. Get caught up on some of those tasks that need to be taken care of, but we’re likely to put off. Go through receipts to send to your bookkeeper, pay bills, hand write personal notes to people, etc. These are the necessary tasks to run your business and when the lights come back on, you’ll be glad you can check those things off your to do list.
6. Be sure to have plenty of postage and mailing supplies on hand. This might be the perfect time for you to get things ready to be shipped out the next day when streets are open once again.
7. Get writing. There’s always so much to catch up on and whether it’s writing e-mails (that can go out when your internet connection returns), to proposals, to written requests for meetings, auto-responders for your e-commerce section of your web site, etc. When the lights are low and daylight is still present, start writing.
Remember, implementing these things will allow for the inevitable calm after the storm! OK, Misty, Angela and Janet, let’s get back to work!
