The Power of our own Inner-Strength
I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon function that featured a guest speaker. As they were introducing the speaker they shared how she had survived a horrific accident that left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair and how today she had turned that around so that her life did not end there. And as the guest speaker herself shared her story of courage, strength, persistence, hope, faith, etc., I was reminded of how powerful we really are.
Do you know how powerful you really are? Have you ever stopped to wonder what you would have done in this situation or that situation as you hear others' stories. We tend to have great admiration for others when we hear their stories of what we perceive to be great courage, strength, faith, etc. However at the same time we tend to minimize our own stories of courage, strength, persistence, etc.
I know that when I share with others my stories of moving across the county not knowing what was in store for me, a lot of people look at me and go, "Wow, I could never do that." And then I would reply back with something like, "Oh, that was nothing." And in doing so, have minimized my own abilities.
Instead, I should have celebrated with this person the power of my own inner strength that made such a transition for me feel easy and comfortable.
One thing that I have recognized over time is that when someone admires me for something I have done, or I admire someone else for something they have done, it is partly because in hearing their story we do not feel like we would have been able to do the same thing. We are, in essence, denying our own power of our own inner-strength.
What if, instead, we admire that person because they have connected with abilities that we do have but have not yet recognized or developed? Wouldn't you agree that that would be a more powerful and uplifting viewpoint or perspective to take?
So why are we more prone to go the other way? Well, I believe it is because of a few different reasons like:
• We are allowing our negative inner voice to have its own way.
• The ego has jumped into action and once again taken the opportunity to deny us our power.
• We are not yet aware of the fact that we have a negative voice that works against us and therefore it runs wild.
• We are still intimidated or afraid of our own inner-strength and power.
• Fear is our primary viewpoint and has clouded our ability to believe in our own capabilities.
• Our confidence and self-esteem is on the low side.
• We are in a state of depression.
• We are being influence by either legal drugs or illegal drugs.
• We have others around us who are either telling us or manipulating us into believing that we do not have inner- strength.
• If I admit to myself that I do have great inner-strength, than I may have to take responsibility for my situation and do something different.
• I am still resisting change and telling myself that I do not like change.
I could continue on but you get the idea. I encourage you to add any of your own reasons that have been triggered by reading this list.
So now what do we do. What if we viewed those stories as possibilities of what everyone and/or anyone is capable of, including ourselves? How would that change our prospective?
Awareness is definitely a key here. We can work on becoming more aware of when we put ourselves down by comparing ourselves to others. We can work on turning those negatives into positives. For example, when we hear somebody's story, in the process of admiring them for their strength, courage, persistence, faith, etc., we can be saying to ourselves things like:
• Wow, I did not know that inner-strength could do that!
• That's comforting to know that those qualities lay in waiting for me, ready to jump into action when I should need them.
• It is amazing what we can endure or accomplish when we put our mind to it.
• It is awesome to realize that I have the capacity to come out the other side and be okay.
• Faith will be there for me when I need to draw upon it.
• I can use this story to inspire me when I need it.
What would you like to add to that list? Make your own list and keep it handy as reminders when you need them. This is a great way to support ourselves.
What I have learned throughout the years is that everyone has incredible strength beyond anything you could ever imagine. It is always there, in waiting, for us to draw upon no matter what circumstances life has delivered to us. However, it is up to me to make the decision to draw upon it, trust it and implement it.
I truly believe that there is absolutely nothing out there that we cannot overcome if we make the decision to do so. And once that decision is made, than our inner-strength has the opportunity to show up and show you what you can really accomplish.
So go ahead and unleash your inner-strength today. Let it come out and play, if only in small amounts to begin with. It is just sitting there waiting for you to give it permission to come out and play today, and tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. And before you know it, it will be playing in very big ways in your life. And those things that seemed impossible now seem exciting and easy.
So try it for yourself. Experiment with it. Keep a journal to track the results. You have absolutely nothing to lose and oh, so much to gain. Meeting challenges head on in our lives is a wonderful way to meet the day.
Create an awesome week for yourself. Try something different!
With love and gratitude,
Elizabeth
