Can An Online Video Be So Bad That It is Good?
Some of the most successful viral online marketing videos are
not the ones starring celebrities, or the ones with big-budget action and
special effects… They are the ones that are produced by smaller companies and
appreciated for their campy, often unintended, comedic value.
In other words, like certain movies, these online marketing
videos succeed because they are so bad that they are actually good.
Seeing these success stories often makes business owners
wonder if they could not pull off the same trick, and put out a low-quality
video that brings their company all kinds of hits for next to nothing. Is it
something you should try?
Possibly, but know from the outset that producing the
equivalent of a B-list online marketing video is sometimes harder than it
seems. If it is not obvious that you are doing it as a joke, customers may
actually think that your company is not very good and end up staying away. Or,
they may spread the video around, but never have any intention of actually
buying from you.
To stop any of these things from happening, here are a few
quick tips for producing an online marketing video that is just bad enough to
be good for sales:
Start with a good
script. As with everything, the devil is in the details and the planning.
Imagine your online marketing video shot by shot, and then think about what you
want viewers to think at each stage. This is no place to be sloppy with your
message... Especially when you are doing it on purpose.
Use professional
editing. As any veteran filmmaker will tell you, there is a big difference
between something looking unedited
and actually being unedited. A good
video marketing team can help you produce a piece that looks like it was shot
off-the-cuff, even if lots of planning went into it.
Make the jokes
obvious. There is a time and place for subtle humor, but as we mentioned,
you do not want people thinking that your video is serious if it is not. Make
sure viewers can tell the difference between something that's tongue-in-cheek
and a clip that is just plain awful.
